He can't hit you with a punch while one is still out. By that I mean, if you make that jab miss or fall short you are free until it gets back. Does that make sense?
That is your window to do two things: move into range and counter.
That is why, earlier, I suggested the straight right to the body off of his left jab. As you slip the punch (over your right shoulder) you slide your left foot forward, throwing the right hand and remembering to bring your right foot with you. Now you are in close and can throw more punches. At the very least, you'll give him something to think about which will shorten his jab, make him hesitate to throw it, and that will allow you to close the distance.
The same with the left hand counter I mentioned above; you come off the back foot and are now in close.
Watch some video. I would suggest Ruben Olivares as he was very good at thjis, so good that it may be discouraging. Try Alberto Davila; he was 5'1", a very skillful boxer, and a guy I grew up watching. Watch how he stays at the end of a guy's punches, then gets in close, gets out, etc...I think that some of his fights are on you-tube.

Cool, thanks man. So after i get in and land my punches, i should go back out, or stay in?

One thing you don't want to do is get caught in between. Either stay in close or get out of range again. When you are in close, stay busy or get sideways. Being squared up will get you hit if you aren't busy.
Be alert to turning angles, especially by moving to your right, around his left hand. That takes you out of his punching range, but gives you the option to keep punching. Ivan Rodriguez did this to Gatti in their fights- Ivan was taller but you'll get the idea.
Another guy to watch, how he closes distance, fights inside, gets out, etc...is Buddy McGirt.

GNS gives clear cut advise which is good to read. now for me bro you can't overthink this here. forget the sparring with a couple buds just for fun. if there was something on the line like $$$$ of a title your mindset would be different. being shorter doesn't mean you have to get inside. you can lure him inside. it's about distance. if you are landing good to the body. stick to it while throwing shots after the downstairs blows. nothing wrong with a kidney shot or hittin him on the hip to get his attention. an elbow behind the hook when you miss will at least make him think for a second .tie him up when you are out of position and release him throwing shots as he backs out. not saying to fight dirty just keep the opponent thinking instead of you. the height stuff means nothing. how about bringing your conditioning to another level where you have the stamina to out hustle a guy. as a philly trainer who has been in there from the juniors to the trials and as a C rate pro i can tell you roadwork is a lost art. look at how fighters jog. they barely lift their legs. they just trot. double the training. get in better shape. parry punches, when inside if in trouble put that head under his chin clinches. never acknowledge a good shot. if u get hit low. hit m back low. spar with amateur top prospects since they throw tons of punches it will help your reflexes. and last. i don't know him but GHS gives good advise. maybe have a bud tape the sessions on a phone then go back and LOOK at it for study purposes. good luck bro. don't have to listen to me just my opinion but leave the play sparring alone. notice the kings of the gym never win titles.

Id fight way different if money was on the line, and especially if the guy was my size. But as it is, im just getting in the ring with a body, and working on things.

Ya, i spared again last tuesday and tried that. Was way more effective, and kinda worked them over. I let them come to me, let them close the distance for me. I was able to land some good counter hooks, one knocked his mouthpiece out and stopped the fight.

And ya, im not afraid to go to the body (actually i focus on going to the body, i love it lol).
