  • Should I start boxing?

I've been interested in boxing for quite some time, I want to start but I have a few strikes against me. I am not athletic, I was never good at any sports. I have asthma, which make me tire faster than other people, and I don't think there are any champions with asthma, but maybe there is? Last I'm 16, my father said its too late to start a sport.

What do you guys think? I really want to box I love watching fights and I think need it for the discipline, confidence, protection and to make me fit.

    Sorry for my poor English.

There has been a few asthmatic world champions, Shannon Briggs for one. Its never too late, 16 is a great age to start.

If you put the work in, anythings possible.

I thought Tyson had asthma. I could be wrong. Not to be cliche' but its never too late to start a sport. But the longer you wait, the harder it gets.

hey man. 16 isnt too late at all. even if you dont make it to pro, the confidence you will gain will still make it the best thing you ever do. You sound exactly like me a few years ago. im 18 now, and i havnt got alot better sadly, but thats due to having surgery on both shoulders. I cant wait to get back to it becasue its the best thing i ever did. It acturally made my asthma better! and although it makes it harder (even harder for me because i cant breath through my nose, and leaving your mouth open sparing isnt too clever, but neither is suffocating) but not impossible. Just make sure to work on your cardio more. I also heard that pavel's power breathing will strengthen the breathing muscles, along with other core work to strengthen the diaphragm and will make it easier, but i dont know if this is true.

One last bit of advice, for the first 6 months dont get distracted by weights or running. just box as much as possible. its good to run, but only if you can keep up with the max boxing. after 6 months you will need to start working with weights and roadwork to increase your strength and conditioning, but forget that for now. just learn the basics and the boxing sessions will get you into much better shape

Dear i think it is hard to start boxing with asthma. Boxing need hard training, good healthy, strong body and great stamina. So all these are get by doing work out with regularity. And age factor is not over but little older. Because you need 1 year for learning basic & trick of boxing. So if you can control on asthma then you start you passion in boxing.

I have asthma and I box. It's controllable. Don't sucker yourself into depending on your inhaler though while at class, then you will always need it. I always bring my inhaler, but if i feel my lungs start to inflame, I try my hardest to not use my inhaler unless I absolutely have too.

At first I used to use my inhaler once or twice a class. Then I found that I can work through it and now it's probly down to using it once a month.

I have zero experience with Asthma so the others can answer that better, but there is NO right age to start boxing if you are a realistic person.

Of course if you start when you're 20 don't expect to be a world champion, but like you said it's healthy, it gives you confidence and will get you into sick shape. Even just boxing as a hobby is a great activity to do.

16 is perfect. dont listen to anybody that says anything over 10 is too old. the older the better, older people actually have a passion when they start doing something they love. kids just do it because its fun for them for a while since they dont have to train hard or show up all the time or compete and all that, or they get forced to do it by their parents and by the time theyre 15 they quit because they are not passionate about it and only did it to satisfy their parents.

as for the rest in your post, you dont have to be in shape to start boxing. thats what training is there for and the trainers understand that. they'll not force or scream at you if you are tired. every beginner goes through that, nobody shows up in perfect shape unless they did some other sport at a very high level i guess but that's like 1% of the people

                hit the gym now

its never too late to do something you enjoy. i see old guys at my boxing gym all the time

also don't worry about not being athletic, or asthma, it just means you have to work a little bit harder than others and find ways around it

just make sure you are determined and prepared to dedicated a lot of time and hard work in to the sport
