This is what I think...if everything was good and you felt great...you would be taking that for granted and would not be making this thread and asking. So my guess is...you are dealing with some pain and wondering if you are over doing it and asking for opinions. So my answer is...if you need to ask then something is wrong and you might be over-do for a good rest and healing period. I know you are having some pain issues because you have mentioned it in a couple of other threads. I say take some rest...do some stretching and get some very deep massage/myofascial release therapy...warm baths...and most of all...try giving up beef and chicken for a while. I remember you once saying you eat chicken everyday. I used to do the same...for over a decade and suffered a lot. When I gave it up I went back to feeling the way I did over a decade ago. It might sound quackery like...it did to me before I tried it...but I swear by it now.

running with wrist weights or a weighted vest are much much better options....if you really really really want to run with weights.

He's only using 5 lbs...I'm thinking 2 1/2 lbs per leg. 10 lbs per leg doing 5k runs 5 times a week doesn't make sense. Having extra weight above the knee will cause more cartilage wear and deterioration due to knee joint compression. That's why overweight people tend to have more knee problems. Although hitting the ground with extra weight anywhere on the body will put more stress on the knees...there is still much less knee joint compression going on. Also less weight is used to begin with because the weight is not displaced throughout the body...but rather focused on the feet.

in the case with the weights you reccomend,
what happens when running with these is your heel or front of your foot act as a wedge this splits the area below where the velcoro hooks through the metal loop allwoing the metal loop to dig into your foot. this also causes the weight to loosen increaseing the up and down movement of the ankle weight. eventaully with enough running the metal loop bends and becomes unuseable.
running with ankle weights is an all around bad idea.Last edited by Spartacus Sully; 04-19-2012, 01:31 AM.

Running period even without any additional weights is bad for your joints...technically adding anything at all only makes it worse. However...if you don't have any knee issues and pay attention to signs that something is wrong I don't see a problem. I used to run and used ankle weights periodically...but now I have an elliptical machine and a stationary bicycle and stick with that because I don't want any knee problems...I had a motorcycle accident sometime ago and although my knee is OK for the most part...it is compromised and I have tears in the cartilage.
I have to assume since Tim uses them regularly for 5K runs that they don't bother him. Let's see what he has to say about that.

a few posts ago you claimed it wouldnt have an impact on your knee, here you claim that adding anything will only make it worse.
at the very base of my point is that ankle weights do have an impact on your knee, to fruther extrapolate on that point, im stating that ankle weights have a much greater impact on you knee then wrist weights or a weighted vest.
so at the base of my point we agree that ankle weights will impact your knees, as will any weight.
as far as ankle weights vs wrist/weighted vest you need nothing more then simply running with weights on your ankle, then take them off and run with them on your wrists to see the clear diffrence. nothing you can say twords this aspect of my point can take away the experimental evidence that any one with ankle weights can experience. assumeing you even have anything to say in reference to this point.
and my final statement, forgive if ive missed it, but has tim even claimed he is using ankle weights? assuming i didnt miss anything for all we know tim could be jogging with some 2.5 lb dumbells.

As far as my having said that and then saying...
"Running period even without any additional weights is bad for your joints...technically adding anything at all only makes it worse. However...if you don't have any knee issues and pay attention to signs that something is wrong I don't see a problem."
I'm pretty sure you understood the point and it's not worth arguing over....considering that all you are trying to do is argue pointlessly now.
