running 5 k with five pound weights, five times per week - too much? are the weights even necessary?

i'm old and not really training for anything other than fitness, 6'1 , 210lbs.

i don't see why it'd be pointless? The more you can train yourself the better, just make sure your eating enough and getting enough water daily...

I can't give you a definitive answer, but I personally wouldn't run with weights simply due to the extra stress it will cause your joints. If you're looking for a better workout, perhaps just work on increasing your speed.

Having said that, I know Scott Harrison used to run uphill wearing a weighted rucksack and he supposedly had great physical strength in the ring.

        yes its pointless.

in my opinion the only reason any one should wear ankle or wrist weights it to walk with them. though you can use them for curling, pull ups, leg lifts, sit ups, ect.

its like this, your fuel comes from a mix of carbs and fat, the lower your heart rate the higher the % of that is coming from fats the higher the heart rate the higher the % of that is comeing from fats. so essentially instead of just relying on a calorie deficit you can walk keeping your heart rate down, and increase the calories burned with extra weights.

this is really what ankle weights and wrist weights are used for, IMO.

actual weighted vests are the only thing i would ever run with and have alot more versatility as far as jogging with one i really dont think it has much improvement, though id think doing 100 meter sprints wearing a 10 lb vest would be helpful similar to how sprinters do sled runs and parachute runs.

If you're a fighter and are preparing for a fight, it may depend on your training goals and training stage. I don't recommended using weights to run on flats but I do recommend using a weighted vest to run hills on days that you want to increase the intensity of your workout but hopefully you already have the physical condition foundation because it can cause injury as well as wear and tear on your joints. Whatever you do, Do Not use ankle weight to run.

You dont need to use weights. It's like when I see people shadow boxing on the treadmill. I dont know what they are trying to achieve. If a run is not hard enough without weights then you need to push yourself a bit more, run faster or longer etc.

Really...it all depends on how you feel. If you feel good then it's good for you. If you feel run down or hurt...but are pushing your way through it anyways then it's probably time to ease up and take it down some and then resume again at a later time. You're not training for an event but if you are doing it to maintain a periodic training cycle and want to "peak yourself" say twice a year for a period...to keep yourself as young and vital as possible...then that's been my plan and I say go for it.

i would get rid of the weights, if your just doing it for fitness its not worth ruining your knees, especially if your not young any more. but i would keep up the running or at least cycling

If there ankle weights which are below the knees...the extra weight won't impact the joint.

it can't be good for tendons at the back of the knee though, right?
