  • Sparring next week :D

    Hey guys,
Ive only been at the boxing gym for 1 month roughly and thats me finally going to be sparring. I absolutely love boxing and cant stop shadow boxing and wanting to keep on my feet, finished has increased greatly and speed.

Anyways just curious to any tips or advice or anything i should be prepared for (a huge smack to the body :P) or how your first spar went.

My first spar went fine and yours will too. Just relax, take it easy and focus on the things you've been taught. A few pointers.
    - Don't brawl, box.
    - Keep the punches nice and straight.
    - Don't get disheartened if you get hit a lot, no-one has good defence initially.
    - Don't tense, keep all your muscles relaxed.
    - Show respect to your sparring partner.

man i remember my first sparring...gassed up on the 3rd round when i was doing great against this guy then he started tagging me pretty bad...good thing we were only doing 3 rounds the first time

what i can say is make sure you got a mouthguard and some protection, i usually spar without headgear as it feels really uncomfortable

don't go 100% just go like 60% and be relaxed the whole time

and last but not least make sure you're rested and ready good luck

I'll keep it short. Stay calm, if you get tagged hard, still stay calm and try not to retaliate with power punches. More than likely if they're someone with experience the likelihood of you hitting them with most likely wild punches will be small. Control your breathing with the tsssh sound. Good luck

How old are you? How much have you possibly learned to practice it in a spar ring?
Sounds like your in for a lesson or the trainer is trying to prove a point about something. If your a young kid you have no right in a spar session after only a month. Good luck! Ray.

I'm 19, during the pad work practise I've been getting taught about defence, and I think my first spar is going to with a guy who trained along side me, I think the trainer wants to get to see what we are like. And it maybe over a month but under 2

Light sparring is reasonable after a month, in fact I would encourage it.

Absolute best tip I wish someone had told me:

                Stay calm and breath steady.

It is incredibly easy to get too worked up, and breathing heavy after just 1 round.

Slow, steady, and strategic wins the race.

Don't tense up, you'll be able to take a lot more punishment if you stay loose. The only exception is if you see a bodyshot coming that you can't avoid, you'll want to tighten your stomach up.

The first unexpected bodyshot you receive will not be a pleasant experience, believe me. Mine, it didn't drop me, but it knocked the wind out of me for a good few minutes.
