A donut has like 250 calories. Had to point that out.

Thread starter: You might be underestimating your intake if you aren't hungry all the time.

I know. Donuts are lumped in with the worst foods though, and they aren't actually that bad...a croissant is a lot worse.

I don't understand. You are trying to put on muscle but are actively taking measures to eat at below your maintenance?

            Is this real life?

Its extremely difficult (and at your weight I would say borderline impossible) to put on muscle without eating at a surplus.

If you want to build muscle you must eat at above your maintenance and put up with the minimal fat gains. Just eat at a slight surplus. Find your maintenance then eat 300-500 calories above that. Train hard, lift heavy.

It just depends on what youre eating...

                    Stick to lean protein foods.

Chicken, fish, low fat cottage cheese, egg whites.

                    Lots of veggies.

Low carbs, and when. You do eat cRbs make sure theyre complex, like whole grain breads and rice.

I have one piece of whole wheat toast with my egg whites and turkey bacon for breakfast... And a half cup of whole grain rice with 4 oz chicken and 1 cup of mixed veggies 90 mins before my workout... Thats it for my carbs.

Its his total calorie intake relative to his maintenance that will determine how much fat he puts on with his lean mass. It doesn't matter if he eats straight up grilled chicken breast and vegetables, if he is eating at a significant surplus he will put on excess fat.

Basically he just needs to work out his maintenance level of calorie intake (trial and error is essentially the only way) then gradually increase his calorie intake above this level to the point that he is adding mass at a slow and steady rate (maximum of 1lb a week is a decent target). Obviously meeting protein and fat requirements is also essential.
