i didnt think i would spar for a couple months that what ive read around the forums so i thought that was the norm. but yesterday they came up to me and told me that i am. i will talk to my trainer tonight, i think he will be there, and let him know whats up i dont think he will let me. i didnt say no because i dont want them to not help me when my trainer isnt there, like with the focus mitts or whatever.

It sounds like there are only two girls in your gym, they're probably wanting you to spar so she finally has another girl to spar. However if you only know 2 punches and can't block or slip, this isnt' going to do either of you much good.

If you decide to do it, have fun, try to pay attention, keep your eyes open and don't over do it. And be careful

--- Also I'd like to add, that I don't think you're actually going to be doing any actual sparring. I think you'll probably be doing some punching drills with the other girl. This might be where you learn a couple defensive moves. If you mess up, you'll probably get hit. (hence the "live punches")

Be willing is very important in this sport, being smart is also! I trained fighters since I was a kid, I've worked with champions of the world so I'm telling you from alot of experience ok. If this gym puts green kids in the "fire" to see what they got I can imagine they make plenty of other rookie mistakes too. be carefull! Ray

what city and state are you in?
The first time I sparred, the guy wasted no time in coming in strong and wailing on me. I was a complete noob and Im sure the guy knew it after a few seconds. I never went in there again without knowing that could happen again.

If its the same guy I met years ago your in good hands if hes training you. Just don't be someones punching bag. Your a new student and don't let anyone take advantage of you by telling you that you need to be tuff and all that BS! To be a fighter you need to be smart and realize you have alot to learn before you have time in the ring. Learning how to hit and how not to get hit needs to be taught first, then you apply what you've learned in the ring. You don't get your butt handed to you then begin to learn, it doesn't work that way unless the managers of the gym are idiots. Ray
