To help you feel the rotation of the hips try this. Stand in fighting position. Get a broom stick or something like that and lay it acrossed and atop your shoulders behind the neck. Rest your arms over the broom stick and begin turning like your throwing punches. You will notice that your hips turn before your feet. Keep up the rotations until you feel the sequence of body movements, remember the motions in your mind. Think asbout the motions while your laying down to sleep. Visualize yourself throwing the right hand with the hips firing before feet. This might sound odd but if you do it you will see. Use the broom stick until you're firting the hips before the feet. Hope this helps..........Rockin'

These videos are mostly 1 minute long and a lot of them are pretty common sense and actually useful. I used to eat these tips up like a fat kid loves cake. Try 'em out, check out some more of the videos, and never give up! Boxing is an investment. And never underestimate it!
I also heard there are two variation of hooks;
one is the hook when the knuckles are facing parallel to the ground and you only turn your hips while doing this.
another is when you turn your whole body but you don't face your knuckles parallel to the ground. I heard the second one has more impact, but I never learned it before.

Throwing the hook with just your hips sounds like you would be loading up, which can be a bit of a gamble since you're telegraphing your punch and it's slightly slower than the one where you use your whole body.
Here's a good video of what i'm talking about: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiWks...iizRZDjwjMT46b

Another question, I get the rotation of the hips during the hook, but how do I connect it with a 1-2-3-4? Do I, in this case, also have to turn my whole body while planting my back foot and twisting my left foot?
When I throw the hook properly I always tense up.

I agree with Slightly Dazed. That's how I learned it as well. It's kinda like how you were doing your 2-3's in your older shadow boxing video. I also believe in the broom trick that Rockin' is talking about. That should also help your body understand what it's like to shift your weight. It just has to click with you and you just have to keep practicing.
Also, I forgot to say earlier, don't worry TOO much on your power. I'm unaware of how long you have been boxing, but the typical sequence when learning is Technique-speed-power. Learn the technique first, then work on speed, and then power should just come easy once you've got the first two down. Some people go backwards and end up having horrible technique (some are fortunate enough to have a ton of power and rely on mostly that). You can build quick, powerful punches through various techniques, like plyometric push-ups, shadow boxing with 1-2 lb weights, drills, etc. But technique and speed is important to learn before power. It doesn't take a whole lot to knock someone down if you know where to hit them. Power is good to have though, for sure. Multiple quick punches + good technique can do wonders for you even if you're not a powerhouse.
But definitely continue experimenting and trying things to see what suits your body best.Last edited by Josh_Shing; 12-30-2011, 09:34 AM.
