Sure you can be decent self taught fighter & learn a lot from watching countless hours of footage & probably do okay providing your technically very gifted & knowledgeable as well willing to put in the hard work. Though this will probably at least in my opinion only really lead to you being a semi-decent club fighter.

Going solo will only get you so far, you need to somebody to pick up on flaws, flaws you often can not see. You need somebody to push you & almost mould you.

Comes down too experience really. You training at home or whatever thinking you know it all from a few video's or a guy that has a decent trainer & has been training with experienced fighters who've been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

Take for example what Manny Stewards knowledge has done. He's been able to take good fighters & turn them into Atgs!

Take Hearns for example or Lewis.

That is what a great trainer can do for if you're willing to listen & put the hard work in.

Guys that just hit heavybags are not learning boxing and can even be drilling bad habits.
            co sign.

a fighter who has no natural ability at all but a good trainer would kill any self taught fighter no matter how much talent they have.

you can never be a professional or amateur fighter if you train yourself. like I said earlier, you can learn to punch and block and bob and weave and look damn pretty doing it on a bag or in front of a mirror, but when the time comes to execute, you're ****ED! you can train yourself for 2 years and spar with someone who has been workin with a trainer for 3 months and get your ears boxed off. if you want to learn to really box, you need coaching and advice, end of story!

You should always study on your own. However you should get experience with a couple different trainers. Then you can really form your own ideas.
