  • Talked with my coach today

    Hey fellas.

A few days ago I injured my foot (the knuckle part of the foot if you know what i mean. the part where the bone is bulging out) and few days ago when I sparred after that it hurt like balls. I went to the doctor and he told me that I need to rehab for 2 weeks, and as i told my coach about this most likely my sparring competition will get cancelled.

The whole reason why exactly I decided to stay at my current gym is because I was entering the competition, but now without that I told him I would like to change this month as my semester exam would come up. However, for some strange reason he suggested me not to change, and to stay at the gym I am in right now. I thought "Man this guy crazy he doesn't teach me ****"

However, after a half hour of reasoning and questioning I found the true reason why he suggested me to stay.

    1. Mainly because my body is weak; not only I don't have enough muscle but my body just breaks down easily. If my body keeps on breaking down before fights my coach at the new gym probably would just ignore me (the gym mainly focuses on amateur/pros, the complete opposite of my gym)
    2. I always do ****** **** to betray my coach. Like for example when the coach was preparing for my first sparring session in July the day before I left to Las Vegas I was like "Hey coach I'm goin' to Vegas tomorrow" and he told me that he wasn't pissed or anything but he felt betrayed. I can understand this because if I think I wanna do something I just do it without thinking about the consequences.

After I heard that I felt like a real, real d*ck for being so rude. Curse my weak body, because of this I could not enter the competition and on top of that I was telling what I want to do at the coach and afterwards telling him I dont want to do and that pattern just repeated over and over again. But he said that he never scolded me, but he did get frustrated with me for being so selfish. Told me that I was still a brat and he is an adult, so he thought it was immature to get pissed as hell at me. Also told me that if you said that to another coach at your new gym he would be like "**** you do whatever you want." That I do have to say he is 100% correct.

After all the conversation, I thought about changing my gym and I decided to stay at my gym. Although his coaching may dissatisfy me its probably because I'm rushing things. I'm thinking of taking it slow this time and respect and listen to my coach the best way I could. I might not have the best ability of boxing or the best athletic ability in any sports but I'm working hard to go into college with a boxing scholarship (my grades aren't that good but i'm trying my best to improve it) so until then, I'm with my coach. He knows me very well in alot of ways lol. We both agreed that before we move on we need to focus mainly on toughening my body up.

Not a question, but I really wanted to hear some opinions about this. I apologize for the long essay but I just had to write it down.

do you feel a little better now that you've written it down?

Is it your ankle that is bothering you?

Anyway, it sounds like your coach cares about you dude. Stick with him for a while and as you already said you were going to -- listen to him. Coaches are there to guide you and make sure that you are doing things correctly.

      Good luck!

Sorry, but a coach that refuse to teach a guy defense, headmovement, gives confusing instructions and doesn't correct beginner mistakes for over 9 months is a coach you should change.

Ofc he wants him to stay......
It is a ego thing and a money thing.
It also seems like he doesn't acknowledged his own mistakes and blame MMF's "weak body".
Sorry bro, you don't look too weak to me honestly.

Your coach sounds like a pimp manipulating a young hoe, playing on your guilt and low self esteem.

Sorry but in these cases you have to look out for yourself.
Do you want to be a better boxer?
Then find a better gym as simple as that.

It's like being in a toxic relationship out of loyalty, you are only hurting yourself.

Listen many people change gyms a lot in the beginning until they find a good fit.
At least try some different gyms out, talk to the coaches and tell them that your current coach have barely teached you anything over 9 months.
Ask them if its normal for a boxing gym to barely teach defense in over 9 month and ask them if they can help to correct somethings that your coaches "taught" you.

My friend was guilt tripped into staying in his old gym to but I told him he should leave as soon as possible.
He switched gyms and started fighting Am the next year and won the Swedish junior AM championship with his new coaches.

Nah it didn't say much about it in this tread but by gathering from other treads TS made, his coaches didn't seem to be good at all.
Telling him ****** **** like " your hands are to fast for your legs", making him overthink every punch,
Vaguely telling him he has to have "correct form" when punching but not showing him what they mean, 2 jabs per minute mitt work, not teaching him defense, only teaching him 2 combos(1-2, and 1-2-3) in over 9 months lol.

You didn't know that cuz TS didn't wrie it.
His coach has guilt tripped him multiple times into staying.

Stand strong kid! you are not training for your coaches, you are training to better yourself.
You can stay and waste your time or you can find a better gym.
I thought you had heart and dedication.
I thought you had aspirations of being a boxer.
If this is true then have the courage to go out of your comfort zone.

It isn't your "weak body" that is the problem, it's your coaches bro.
That he blamed your "weak body" just shows he lack essential understanding or self-criticism to be a good coach.

Thanks guys, thing is I don't know what to tell him now. My body is weak, that IS a fact. When I was in the Varsity basketball team I broke my finger when getting a rebound, and when at boxing I injured my wrist because of working too hard on weight lifting and now I injured my foot which I can't think of any significant reason of why this happened. Come to think of it I found a massage machine for my foot and I did that for over 20 minutes 'cause it felt so good, that might be the case but I don't know, I'll go to the doctor today and tell him that and I'll get to you guys with the results.

Yeah so I injure alot and as my coach said, the new gym focuses on raising pros and amateurs. If I keep on breaking my body down like this my coaches would surely get bored of me and ignore me like some piece of trash. Also like I said before, I have this bad habit of doing whatever the **** I wanna do without thinking about the consequences. That would worsen my relations with my coaches as well, that is true so its a MUST for me to fix that. My coach told me I am underestimating boxing if I am thinking that way, **** do I look like I'm underestimating boxing, hell no! I just want to move to a professional gym because,

              1. They have **** loads of equipments there. starting from gloves to weight lifting equipments as well as treadmills
              2. They have a black trainer from Uganda, he speaks English so it would be easy for me to understand.
              3. Coach won't allow me to use the speedbag until 7pm and he telling me to come to the gym as soon as school ends.
              4. I want to finish my homework and study for my tests as fast as possible. I had a F in World Studies. However I got a B+ on my previous test so hopefully I could start off strong in the 2nd quarter. IT starts like either this or next week and I just have to do good.

My gym is so overrated as well.

this is an example of a workout routine for people who wants to improve stamina. At the end, it says to go on a treadmill and run and do some weight lifting workouts. Yeah, you don't HAVE a treadmill, you just have a pair of 4kg dumbells.

this site is the old homepage of the gym, and at the top right hand corner you see a women lifting an EZ curl bar. My gym don't have that, and its not that big.

This is the gym I want to train at,

Yes, it is huge and there alot of americans/mexicans at my gym. It's pricey but I think it's defenently worth it.

Oh yes, and I also have another reason why I want to quit; all the background music i hear are songs i hear from the 80~90's and for people like me who loves r&b and hip hop, i thought boxing gym swere supposed to play songs like Remember the Name by Fort Minor or Usher or you name it, and I just can't be motivated listening to old songs.

My gym probably has the kindest and warmest environment ever, but I am still thinking if I should change my gym. I want to, but I am worried that someone like me would get ignored.

Ur gym sounds weak. Mine isn't a boxing one, but it atleast carries some decent boxing gear(pads/climbing simulator like in rocky/treadmills/different types of heavy bags/jumpropes/kettlebells, etc) and tons of great workout equipment. It's a huge 24 hr gym. The people who run it really care about their members and you can tell. The owner taught me how to apply my handwraps, former mma fighter that guy. Showed me a few tips. But I'm happy.
Met another guy there practicing muay thai(was with his niece) who is a trainer from another gym and dude hooked me up with a free sparring session/dropped some real boxing fundamentals on me then gave me his #. Going to go check his place out and if I like it then I'll switch up. Said he was only there for his niece who had a membership there and brought him along as a guest. Win win lol
