So where in Japan are you from? And are u mixed, or just Japanese going to an international school? And don't worry, in the beginning it's a lot of uncertainty with boxing and sparring. It takes time to get used to it and also become comfortable. I became a pro this year and I have only been boxing for 2 years, 1 year four years ago and last year till now. Though I have natural skill, it's totally different stepping into the ring and boxing. It's not fighting and must understand that it is a chess game with fists. My first fight I was so overwhelmed with emotion I couldn't think straight, gassed out and was tko'ed. So for you, just keep focused and learn to calm down. U don't have to rush it. Learn and let it become second nature. U have shown a lot of heart and that is important not only in boxing but life. Keep it up, I'll cheer for u when u make it big. Ganbare!!!Comment

Thanks mate, I'm from Nagoya in the Aichi-Prefecture, don't know if anyone here has heard of it though. I'm full Japanese(I'm not a Japanophile lol) and I was speaking and learning English as far as I can remember, so I feel more comfortable speaking in English more than Japanese haha. Thanks alot, I really appreciate the support! Ganbarimasu! lolComment

If there is someone in your gym with similar experience to you it might be better to spar with them under supervision and go harder. It can bring more out of you when someone is really trying to hit you and its the only way to ever improve. if your not a little scared you wont focus and in tern improve.
But nice vid and if it is in anyway helpful I would say head movement, head movement, head movement. Oh and as a general principal try to circle counter clockwise away from the opponents right hand. Oh and head movement.Comment

thanks man, but yesterday i got beaten so bad lol.
heres a video, now this is what i call ASHAMED
But I think your biggest problem isnt the defense it is your obvious hesitation and nervousness, which more often then not goes away the more you train. You can definitly put more into your punches then what you are doing just dont second guess yourself, every movement you make should be quick and sharpLast edited by Danny Gunz; 10-19-2011, 08:03 PM.Comment

thanks guys, and i cant do head movement. the reason why is i dont know how to do it. my coach never, ever told me any defense whatsoever, no catching jabs, no weaving, no bobbing, no head movement, nothing. but right now im actually a little more comfortable during sparring as im doing it with my coach, i think im being much more relaxed than the 2nd link.
ive been training for almost a year now, and im going to switch gyms and will be training at the new gym at the 1st of december. the new gym specifies in training pros and possibly amateurs. i wanna go for amateur first though.Comment

Boxing isn't for everyone but you clearly love it so I wish you the best of luck and hope your new gym can offer you a better opportunity to improve over time.
One small tip I would suggest in terms of bobbing/weaving:
stand on the ball of your back foot with you front foot flat, knees bent guard up in front of mirror or bag. Then simply by twisting your back foot you will weave side to side and you can up and down as you do so. You can practice this and trow shots of it to get used to the balance and mechanics of the movement.
Hope that makes sense.Comment
