  • Benifits of using heavier gloves in training

Hello, i was wondering what would the actuall benifits of using 18oz or 20gloves for the bags and pads would be (i fight in 10's). My hand speed is already fast and i been only using 12oz and 14oz in training for around 4 years, but it could always improve. However if i started using heavier gloves i wouldnt want them to have a negative effect on my speed and get me used to throwing my hands out slower because of the weight of them or make my punches sloppy ,if you get what im saying. I guess if it aint broke dont fix it kinda thing. But also im trying to look for that next level and thought maby this could be it.

I think by using the heavier gloves it could possibly improve speed, endurance and punching power. I think its kinda become common knowlege, sence and advice in all boxing gyms that if you train in 20oz all the time and then put a pair of 10oz's on for your fight your hands are going to be lightening fast, but how many people have actually done this and can comfirm it works!? i seem to have gone the opersite route and achived above average speed .
i just went and bidded on a pair of gloves on ebay so i guess im guna find out anyway....... Do any of you train with 18's or 20's i even consider 16oz kinda heavy? If so what effects has it had on your punch?

I've done it the wrong way. Training in my 12oz because they're so comfortable and protect my hands well but the lads training in the clubs' 16oz Lonsdales definitely developed quicker hands....My black eye is testament to this :P So like you, I'm looking for a pair of 18/20oz I've also noticed slightly increased endurance in people I class as the same level as me.

youll get quicker hands but youll also develope much better punching power. Punching is the best way to work your punching muscles, so add some weight to that and viola. Some HW's use 20's-22 oz

Using heavy gloves / hand weights to develop speed / power on the bag is certainly worthwhile.

However, I'm not convinced using heavy gloves for sparring is optimal. If you and your sparring partner both wear heavy gloves, hand speed will be reduced to a level that does not replicate competition.

I always spar with 16 oz but just had a pair of 20oz gloves for bag/mitts ect. They are really good for endurance and they do make your arms a lot stronger. As far as increasing speed I felt slower when I was using them all the time but I wore them out and now switched to 14oz gloves and feel like now my hands are getting faster from using the bigger gloves like. I think it may be good to use heavy for a period and then lighter for a period and keep switching it up to change the mix up workout so your body doesn't get to use to one thing and you keep it working harder.

he's not the benchmark of speed, but cotto wears 18oz to train.

I like to hit the bag in 16oz and when you switch the 10's your like a super saiyan. Howver i do believe that it is worth putting on the smaller gloves sometimes too, as in my book if you train slowly in large glove (all of the time) your timing will be conditioned to punching that way
