  • Arm Endurance

alright, heres the deal, i was sparring today and i was real dissapointed in my performance, because my arms get so tired that i cant even throw when i see an opening right in front of me. this problem has been ongoing and is always after the second round. i barely have enough energy to throw a jab, but i dont have enough to throw combos or keep my hands up. i know some of you say that you just have to force yourself to do it, and thats my whole attitude, but my mind is telling myself to do it but my body wont let me. so do you guys have anything i could do to improve my arms and get rid of this flaw? i was thinking of buying those weighted gloves from ringside, thanks everyone.

The weighted gloves are a good idea.

Heres something a little different, i went out and bought a 10# sledge hammer and got a 20 in tire.

Slam the **** outta that tire for 2 or 3 minutes and i guarantee ur arms will gain endurance.

After a few rounds my hands, forearms, shoulders neck and back are tired.

Dont knock it till u try it. also remember to switch hands and give ur left side a crack at it.

plyometrics are really meant for explosion and power, but i guess they could help a little with endurance.

the best way to improve it is bag work. try to up the number of punches you throw in 1 round on a heavybag or up the number or duration of the roudns if you dont do too much already.

i find burnouts, like boxer of the world was talking about, to be the most effective way to improve endurance. just have someone hold the bag for you and throw nothing but jabs as fast you can for a minute, then rest for 30 sec and repeat using your powerhand, then both hands, then both hands with hooks or uppercuts, etc. do that at the end of practice and follow it up with some shadowboxing to cool down. if you keep pushing yourself youll have incredible arm endurance in no time.

get a ressistance band and do bicep curls then put your hands up in boxing position and move them up and down(the movement should be from the shoulders)

I had a big problem with my hand endurance. a friend had me do ALOT of shadow boxing with the 12oz gloves on, and alternate that with 1 handed rounds on the heavy bag. this last part really helped me
"always keep your gloves touching your chin until you punch no matter how much you wanna lower them. and when you punch with that 1 hand, imagine your arm is a spring so no matter how fast it comes out, it always comes back to the chin FASTER" I know it seems like common nothin special advice but if you practice and keep alternating. its only a matter of time before your hands will be flying way past the 8 or 10th rounds of practice

Well when i sparr, i do so with 15 or 17 oz gloves. This helps me a lot. Perhaps the most simple thing to do is just not to put ur hands up so high all the time. Another thing is dont tense them a lot, this saps energy and takes power away from the punches u throw.

Alternatively, if your motivated enough, do some sort of weights training that will aid in keeping your hands up all the time.

When I fought for the Navy we did "switches" after our normal bag workouts. Find a partner and one guy goes sixty seconds throwing as fast as he can on the bag, then switch, then switch. Keep doing those. They are incredible for building arm endurance. Don't worry about power, just throw like your life depends on it.
