I have a jump rope with the thin/skinny handles and plastic rope. I had the leather one with the big handles but I hated it. The one with the skinny/thin handles are my preference.

Well I just wondered if as a beginner I needed something in particular (e.g. beaded or bearings) or something like that.
I just stopped by SA and picked up the skinny one -I thought with my small hands that would be good and it was only $3 -so why not!
I got the speed rope from Sports Authority and it would be a good rope if it wasn't for the plastic handles breaking on me the first time I tripped up.
"you can make a rope by soaking a piece of clothesline overnight in a can of light lubricating oil. Hang up the rope and let it dry out for a day. Then, fold the ends of the rope back and tape them into "handles" with bicycle tape. The skipping rope should be fairly heavy but not too thick. That's why you give it the oil treatment." WOW! I would never have thought of that. When I break my Sport Authority one I'll try that -thanks.

My just got one jump rope from Sourcingmap.com and I like it a lot. Easy to adjust and a good weight and thickness. After a week using it my max double unders went from 22 to 37. I would at least highly recommend it.
