Converting to SOUTHPAW!! :D

It really depends on what your dominant hand really is; do not be fooled by some of the success that you see from dominant handed fighters going against their stance ie. ODH and Cotto.
If you are right handed in every aspect I suggest that you stay orthodox. One reason why is that your balance will be off, no matter how much you practice in the stance. That is due to the fact that of brain domanance(which you can't untrain your brain), it may sound a little funny but we as human beings are more stable(coordinated) on our dominant sides. If you walk in a straight line you will always drift to your dominant side no matter how much you try not to. Sure your more potent punches in your arsonal will get to your opponent quicker due to it being the lead hand, but you will be easier for your opponent turn as your balance will be shot.
The second reason is that your stance will be slightly more "squared" that a natural southpaw. Which will make you more open to straight rights from ortho fighters; not to mention the left hook of the jab will find you alot easier, and since your dominant foot is no longer your anchor foot you will be easier to KD unless you widen your stance, and then you open up a whole OTHER can of worms when you do that.
I suggest like another fellow poster on here that you DO learn how to fight out of the southpaw stance so that you can be an effective switch-hitter, but DO NOT make it your primary stance if you are right hand dominant. It will cause you more problems that it's worth. You will have to re-learn(backwards) damn near every aspect of your game, and you'll STILL be off-balanced.Comment

You have greatly intrigued me, I can see the theory in this and I really want to learn more about it. Is there any kind of links you know of to this study of dominant part of the brain traits and such?Comment

ha,! dude i think your theory is great!! ..!maybe this will apply at the beginning becoz im fresh to orthodox ,its like 3 days since im practicing southpaw sparred on the second day with my buddy and i feel it better than my main stance ,but now my footwork is just my only problem ,and my coach and i will surely can correct that im at gym everyday so that will help! and im 100% sure that practice is the best policy ^__^ for what youve said that i cant untrain my brain .. lets take for an example ODH and COTTO ,hmm im not fooled by some of their success,,it just keeps in my brain that if they can do it .. i can do it too
oh come on guys its just a stancemany fighters also converted .. from the beginning of boxing and right now,,did you know that ,, James J Corvett is a converted orthodox who defeated John L Sullivan ?

**** man you arent losin any fights, so why fix whats not broken? You know? And yeah everyone starts as beginners but it takes lots of practice and hard work to become an effective southpaw "convert"... Not saying you cannot do it, you can do anything you want to, but it is alot of hard work, and also very high risk-little reward. I think you should use both atleast if you gonna fight as a southpaw, but fight out of whatever you feel the most comfortable, because that's what really matters... If you have all the power in the world with your left hand, so you want to be a southpaw because its your power hand, that means absolutely nothing if you cant balance yourself as well as you could in the ortho stance. on the contrary, it actually benefits you more in the ortho stance, as it will be your lead hand and youll have a good right to follow it.Comment
