iii) Money counts. Buy a cheap head guard and you've just bought a **** head guard. Obviously you can play the market, some makes are cheaper than others but generally if it's cheap, you'll know/feel why.

iv) make sure it has non-slip material on the inner.
I agree with all of this except point 2 (ii). I've said it before: it would take a lot of beer to convince me to spar with open-face headgear. The point of sparring headgear is to keep you from getting busted up so that you can compete. You need to acclimate to taking a punch but there's no reason to get hurt.

I also want to say, I hate facebar headgear. First off, it's ***** bull****. Secondly, a glancing hook that snags the end of the bar -- or an uppercut that catches the bar and not your chin -- is going to wrench your neck around. The end of the bar becomes a lever and the torque is wicked. A bad hit will hurt your neck for DAYS.

If you don't want to get hit in the face -- for instance, I play the saxophone professionally, so I have sparring sessions where I can't afford to get a busted lip or a bruised nose because I have a gig that night -- buy a full-face headgear with a chin pad and make sure you both spar with 16's (14's if you're a shrimp.) Otherwise, man the **** up. Seriously. Swimmers get wet, surfers get sand in their shorts, boxers get punched in the face. Cope with that or find another sport.

I've only used the facebar headgear after having my nose broken and I hated it so much that I chose to only touch-spar while wearing it.

Like I said, that crossbar is bull****.

Unless you're injured, you don't need it.

Hahah, Good ****. I've got no problem taking a punch, I just hate that the gyms head gear slips all the time and I can't see that good out of it. I think I may try the Rival, not the cheapest but sounds pretty good. Thanks for all the adavice!
