  • How does Mayweather prevent the right hook from landing on him?

I'm working on the philly shell and even though i think this system works very well, i eventually get caught with a right hook at some point of the day.
Floyd never gets caught with a good right hook. He's a master of this technique.

Is this because of the back step or the position/movement of the left arm ?
Can someone with good knowledge can explain how you can improve on this technique?

I'm assuming you mean from the orthadox stance but regardless I'll touch on both. From orthadox not very many boxers throw a right hook because of how open you become when you throw it. It takes long enough for a stright to get there now you want to add a curve to it? It is a very predictable move so you can easy step or lean back or even slap it Down with your lead hand. Now from the inside or even just passed mid range mayweather is the master at sitting in the pocket. He keeps his elbows in and his hands to his head. His left hand covers his body in the pshell and he likes to either roll the shoulder and take the hit there or he will time his shoulder roll to catch the punch and negate the power. This sets up a perfect stright or his favorite uppercut counter. For a lefty he either times a jab coming in, a lead staight, leans or steps back and comes back with a straight or he can throw a check hook. Throwing wide punches is a counter punchers dream to counter against. It is what they look for to inflict most damage.

He usually ducks to avoid the right hook. Or, he twists clockwise to let the punch go by.

because he rarely fights southpaws. Southpaws are the only boxers that can use a right hook effectively, orthodox boxer only use the right hook generally when inside, and in that case Floyd either ducks really low or just clinches.

Southpaws can use the right hook, and they have given FMJ problems in the past.

The right hook has not been a friend of Mayweather. I have seen southpaws land the right hook on Mayweather more than any other punch.

I think Floyd needs to worry about Pac's straight left if anything. The Philly Shell leaves a straight left perfectly aligned. Remember what Corley did to Floyd? Yeah.

If I remember correctly it was a right hook that stunned Mayweather.

I would say that the way he turns his body and leans is how he avoids the right hook. Also floyd moves his right hand over to his left ear sometimes right above his shoulder.

The key, I think for FLOYD is to:

                    • LEFT JAB as a quick counter while moving laterally to his left. Meaning to "counter" while connecting first.

                    • Shoulder Roll while leaning to his right as the opponent's RIGHT HOOK is about to land on his left

                    • Beat the opponent to the punch with his right cross

                    • Leaning back (upper body)

                    • Left Guard up (instead of low)

                    • Bob and Weave to the left and under the Right Hook a la' Pacquiao's Duck and Roll to Hatton's wide left hook or jab

                    • Beating his opponent's left hook with a sharp and snappy left hook (inside) or a left uppercut...
