  • Counters to the Right Hand?

I'm trying to come up with some counters to the right hand to work when shadowboxing.

I've come up with one, which is slipping to the outside, Left Shovel Hook, Left Head Hook, Overhand Right. Practiced it against someone, and it works very well, because your opponent's body doesn't move and a good live shot drops his guard, opening up the Left Hook. The Overhand Right is a nice finisher at the end.

I've also heard that slipping to the outside and throwing a Left Hook, Cross is another option, but I tried it and I'm not crazy about it.

    Any other suggestions?

left hook and spin out 90 degrees over his right, then straight right (works well on those with shorter arms, and you don't have to hit his head with the hook, hitting his arm is just as good)

I was just thinking about posting a thread asking the same question, but lucky you had already made a thread.

I'm a southpaw who is pretty tall for my weight. I like to throw the right jab a lot and hook off of it. Ocassionally my shorter sparring partner tries to lunge in with the right hand over the top. I can see it coming pretty easily, but I usually block it with my glove and back up. What I'd like to do is counter it after I block it.

I was thinking about ducking/slipping the right hand and pivoting to my right. Then I can throw the straight left at him while he's off balance.

That, or whenever he comes in to throw the right, I'll stand my ground and put a stiff jab into his face. Then follow up with a combination.

second to slip outside, left hook, is rolling with his right and landing your own (make sure that chin is down and shoulder up).

Left to the body followed by left hook up top. End of story.

i saw Roach talking about dropping your left to invite the opponent to the throw the right hand and as it comes in turn the shoulder and your head to roll with the shot then come back with a right uppercut

he did say it takes alot of timing though to get it perfect

also same stance and when the right is thrown turn again but let the left hook go at the same time so it hands under his arm right on the ribs

I've seen the video that shows those moves. I haven't tried the right uppercut one, but I love the left to the body.

I seem to use it the most when I'm sparring one of the guys in my gym who is a southpaw to counter his right jab. The punch is made even harder if he steps in with the jab.

Alot of times he doesn't even see the punch coming because he's looking at my head and his right arm is blocking his view of my low left. He just throws a hard jab and gets smoked in the ribs. haha

But that's more of an advanced move because if you **** up the shoulder roll you're going to eat a right hand to the face.

Another counter that is good for people just starting out is duck/slip outside and throw a straight right to the body then pivot and come up with a left hook to the head, and finish with a right straight to the head if you can.

                Your own right hand..........

Simple, easy and if you can get it down works better than anything else.

Because i am usually shorter than my guy i like to lean in to my right and dig a hook to the body followed by a right uppercut. the hook brings him down for the upper cut. most fighters that shoot a lead right are going to keep the left in high guard position. leaving the guts wide open for a killer hook. i am talking righty against righty for sure

Good Mike Tyson style. I was thinking of Tyson because he threw this combination so beautiful.

                    TS

Bob the right hand, Pivot to your right, and from there you can set up your own right, and can follow it with a hook, and uppercutt, which is a beautiful combination. Alot of guys don't know how to deal with this because they're not used to angles from my experience. I hope you understood me. Try to practice this though before you do it in the ring because you could get your ass kicked if you do it wrong.

Picture Tyson moving his head to the right after his opponent throws the right hand, but afterwards pivot to the right as soon as you move your head, and boom catch the dude.

You can also weave under the right hand and pivot to the right at the same time, and catch him with a right uppercut, and follow it up with a left hook.

Remember try Slipping and weaving to the right, but try to always pivot to the right at the same time, and catch him. Personally I try to catch the guys with a right uppercut after this maneuver. The choice is up to you. TS if you do this right you will have some success in the ring when sparring because seldom do I see anyone working the angles where I train.
