You should be moving your head all the time. Keep it rhythmic but don't get predictable. Short left to right movements on the inside, (this is called a "short rhythm, this keeps your head in a constant lateral plane that makes the opponent have to "time" your head in order to throw an accurate strike)

Short forward and back movements when on the outside. (this is your "long rhythm" which is used for drawing out jabs/ crosses and countering. Think about it as being just in range of a strike, and then just out of range. Again, this makes the opponent have to time your head if he wants to take shots at you.)

Aside from your short/ long rhythm you want to have occasional verticle movements to break up the rhythms. Bobbing does this for you. Make sure when you bob you crouch a little and pull into a semi-shell. This can be used to make you that much more elusive. Bobbing further accentuates the unpredictability of your head movements and give you a goo tool to add a randomizing element to your rhythm.

Weaving is another thing you want to use, you can use small weaving movements to also break up your rhythm and add a lateral path to your bobbing so that you can both finish a bob and continue normal long/short rhythms, or branch out from your bob to a weave and transition seamlessly to a lateral movement/ back step, forward step etc.

Some people occasionally toss in a crouch or slip or advancing slip or shoulder dip to further randomize things/ draw reactions or feint attacks. Use this sparingly as it can work against you if an opponent calls your bluff or meets you with an unexpected counter.

Mr. Boxer: I have to admit that sometimes you come off as a troll and some if not a majority of your posts are less informative than most posts I read here. I hate to say it, but you come of like a cheesy motivational poster most of the time, substituting useless tidbits and musings in place or useful information. I'll be the first to say that I don't know much, but I am confident in what I DO know and more than willing to share it without having to add a barrage of useless fluff or BS to try to make myself sound smart. I've literally gotten to the point that I don't read your posts just because you don't ever really seem to either a.) make a valid point. or b.) answer a question directly.

I have no doubt you have a decent chunk of knowledge that many if not all users may find somewhat useful, but you make it a chore to gleam anything from your posts as they come off as pompous, arrogant assholism.

Do more helping and less inspirational bologna.

Or I could just be full of crap. Either way, quit using that ****ing boxer smiley, it's absolutely the most annoying thing I see on this site, and you are the biggest abuser of it.

Yes that one. Quit using it.

i know everyone knows that a slip bag helps improve head movements

but why not try that to help get you in the habit of moving your head? :]

Joe Frazier was good at getting a rhythm with his head. He don't move his feet much though.

      good luck

that's the hard part, considering you're also looking for holes to throw.

you bring your feet with those movements? hard to land a good hard shot leaning back.

what's your fav punch coming off that crouch, uppers?

              good stuff.

I never seen a slip bag, I seen tons of ppl use the double end bag for slipping punches, isnt a slip bag too slow?

You always want to keep your base when you are moving. Slipping, short/ long rhythms don't require you to move your feet aside from positional changes, IE moving around the ring, ducking/bobbing all comes from the knees (and a little torso crunch with bobbing to get in a semi shell) so you don't have to break from your base. Weaving, advancing crouches, advancing slips, and shoulder dips on the other hand do involve some movement of the legs in order to "move your base with you" or to keep your boxers base while moving underneath things. For example, when weaving you will go into your semi crouch by bending at the knees, then take a small step with your left leg, weave under, then come up while bringing your right leg back to return to your base. At no point in this movement are you to be off balance or abandoning your fighting base, but widening it to lower your body and moving laterally.

For crouches, advancing slips and shoulder dips you are using similar movements. Some trainers teach you to just slip left and right at the waist sort of like a metronome. While others will teach you to slip while taking a slight step forward which effectively moves your base forward to counter attack with inside boxing techniques, body shots and what have you. I find this type of slipping really intrusive and you really have to be versed in fighting inside the pocket as you are pretty far in at the end of the motion. Shoulder dips are like a rotating bob that loads a specific side. You don't want to use it too much as it can be somewhat of a tell if you don't practice having multiple branching options off of it. It can be a powerful tool but you need to have really fast upper-body movement and like I mentioned, a good selection of options off of it to keep the movement from becoming an obvious tell of your next movement.

You can use a double end bag without a problem, there is normal ones that are just a ball, then the type that are 2 balls on top of one another to practice high and lot stuff, then there are the Mexican style "Mr. Peanut" looking double end bags. All preference. I like the single ball kind cause they move faster.

Slip bags are also called maize bags. they are just small leather bags full of sand the swing like a pendulum, you just slip them and practice counters, combos etc. You can still find them on the ring side site but they are used a lot less nowadays.

I completely agree, but if he really is just joking and trying to be silly I can cut him some slack. It really is unfortunate though, if he really has all this boxing knowledge he should share it and make the site more useful to the members as there is a lot of pretty useless threads and posts at this site.

I rely a lot on my cover guard (winky style) and wasn't using all that much headmovement until recently. But now I'm trying to work on snapping out a combo, making a movement so my head is in a different spot, then coming back up and firing again.

Headmovement is good on the move I guess but when I'm moving I prefer to sort of slide out of range of punches or check hook out of the way.
