    Aight, so when I was 174 lbs, I would bench 12 reps of 50, then 8 reps of 60, and end with 4 reps of 70. As I went down in weight, it got harder and harder for me to bench, until now, at 135 lbs, it's become quite difficult to manage much with 60 or 70. So I recently decided to do 3 sets of 10 reps each, and bench only 50 lbs. Good call, y/n? I can go through the full motion perfectly now, and I feel a nice burn. But, on the other hand, I had to drop the total weight.

    You weighed 174 and only benched 70x4?

      that's pretty terrible dude, you might want to step your weight up and eat a little more meat.

        Guy asks a question and is honest and you laugh at him, everyone started somewhere... Personally I find it refreshing to hear someone be honest instead of the normal garbage that is spewed in this form (I'm 9999 - 0 All KO's or I bench 8 x 10^34lbs).

          Well speaking on what is common and I mean very common. A good bench press is being able to lift your own weight at least once.

          I mean I'm 185 and some change I can put up 245x5. (Not Bragging or anything)

          When I started lifting some years ago I was 132 and I could put up 115 for at least a couple reps.

          I mean come on something is seriously wrong here, or I could be completely wrong and maybe he was talking about Dumbbell Bench Presses, in that case his numbers aren't bad.

          But seriously 174lbs and and an estimated Max Bench of maybe 95lbs???

          I don't even know what to say other than have someone check your form.

            Everyone is different in terms of lifting weights.
            And I hope you don't mean that it is common for the average male to have the ability to bench his own weight... because I am pretty sure this is false. Average male can barely do 3 chin ups.

                Hmm well thanks to the guys who tried answering with some help :P

                As for benching my own weight, I dunno about that, I highly doubt I could. I can do every type of weight training great but bench presses I just can't manage. When I was 174 the highest I went was 90, but that was with some assistance. Again, I'm a small guy now (5'4 1/2, 135 lbs) so that could maybe factor in a little bit, but yeah, I honestly am always surprised to see people talking about benching like 220 lbs or whatever when I would prolly max out at 90.

                  LOL!!! No offense, but that's nothing to brag about.... I agree with other post, too many experts in here who criticize from hitting the bag to whatever else anyone does, yet no videos!!! Dont mean it because of you, I'm a fan of keeping humor in the forum but lets be humble.

                    185 and a Max Bench of 275 I think is pretty good, IMO and I was never bragging about anything.

                    You can't give advice or constructive criticism without videos? As if a video would make your word or your advice anymore credible.

                    As for the OP I apologize if I was a ****, I didn't mean to be just thought it was really out of the ordinary for you to not be able to bench more than 90 @ 174.

                    For a guy that's 5' 4" though that may be a contributing factor, your form may me struggling, or maybe you are also weak in other areas which may be contributing to your bench.

                    I don't know all I can think to tell you is have a person who knows what they are doing when you workout to check your form while you bench so you can maybe get an idea of where you're at.

                    Then start lifting more weight. If you stick to the same weight and rep ranges forever, your bench is never going to improve.
