How to make a great counter puncher

You need to spar. Also, when on the heavy bag, work your slipping/ducking/parry/blocking into your routine and practice your follow ups. You want to have a good range of follow up counter punches as well as a good grasp on your defensive options.
Start with basic, jab parry-> counter jab set ups, then work small combos off that and move into slipping and countering, etc. put some time in with the maize bag and the double end bag as well. It wouldn't hurt to set up a slip rope to practice techniques to use coming out of your rolls.
Have fun.

you have to work at it,i got a hold of a couple of wilfredo benitez fights and i studied and practiced, benitez was the best counter puncher ever,in the gym you have to work and sweat, you have to want it,if you need it you must want it,keep your eyes on your opponent when he throws a jab **** counter, when he throws a right **** counter

Have a tight well rounded defence, and the timing to get the counter in
I usually counter punch from behind a tight guard, let him attack and hit my gloves, then half step back and counter as he is attacking. Or spin out and counter
Theres millions of ways to do it though

Drills will not really teach you how to counter punch. You need some experience and it will come.
Drills play a crucial role, it is an important link that leads to sparring !! Sure, there are a few individuals who have great natural instincts and may not need as much "hand holding". Everything in boxing revolves around drills! whether it's a basic 1-2 or as advanced as pivoting and putting combinations together simultaneously.
The idea of practicing a certain counter or combo over and over again is to make it become instinct, so when you finally do step inside that ring to spar or compete, you no longer have to think, the reaction becomes automatic.

To the thread starter, the best way to work on counter-punching is to have a partner.
For example-
Partner: Will lead by throwing a basic combo
Thread starter: Pick out one combo to counter your partner's combination
Just keep doin' this until you feel comfortable and become more fluid with your counter, you may want to come up with another counter against the same combo so you don't become predictable.
Once you've got that out of the way, move on to the next.
Picture it this way, we were all first taught how to count from 1 to 10 and it evolved to learning how to add to subtract and so forth and finally problem solving to figure out which formula to use( in boxing it's called sparring)
The best advice and the only advice I can give you is to practice, practice, practice Hell even Manny Pacquiao practices his counters he'll use for his biggest fights, take a look at video below as the world's greatest fighter today practicing his counter
What was PAC doin' in the video? Answer: He was practicing his move, the one Hatton kept sayin' was "The same move everytime", obviously Hatton didn't practice enough for that same combo he was poking fun at!Last edited by BOX-A-LOT; 10-16-2009, 01:03 AM.
