    Bulking

I haven't been able to go to boxing for a long time due to the gyms closing. I have always been extremely skinny due to my fast metabolism but am considering bulking. Although I am aware it relies on many factors, I was wondering how you can tell what your walkaround mass is. For reference I am 5'8.5 and 118.5 pounds. Should I bulk? If so, how high should I go, and how should I do it? Cheers.

Bulking is for body builders not fighters, in general. You have decent height at your current weight. Learn to use that height with skill instead of bulking up to ko every fighter that you may face. You will score more ko's with true skill rather than brute strength. Weight training is a plus in my mind though, but bulking up is for guys who want to appear tough. With true skill you will be soooo much tougher than those muscle heads...........Rockin'

Hate to say it, but Rockin is right.

You actually have a good height advantage for bantam. Eat steak and get strong, forget bulking up. Honestly, getting built up is out of style now.

I've actually got a really inspirational story for you.

We used to have a bantam weight here in the late 80's that was the most amazing amateur I've ever seen. In the gym he would drop heavyweights with body shots. Nationals all that, everybody that knew him called him the biggest waste of talent they've ever seen, verbatim.

Personally, some of his punches were so good, I've only seen a few pro's able to pull it off. This kid could hit you with 4 left hooks in a row, 4 different angles, and there was nothing you could do about it accept take your lumps. My first day in the gym he was sparring with an awesome pro jr welter who held domestic titles and dropped him in the first two minutes. Known tough customer too. Maybe went down once or twice in his career against world champs and flash knockdowns too.

Don't let being not being bulky stop you from greatness.
