I use it but you can not use it for every punch. Worthless against a jab. But a right hand if timed well you counter with your own. I tend to only use it when I see a right coming in mainly parry the jabs and weave the hooks. But, do not try and use it all the time as your opponent will time it.

Dont copy anybody or say "i wanna fight like him,"
go to the gym and try spar a few times a week,
get alot of practice in you will develop your own style that you feel comfortable with.....

"Shoulder Rolling," is alot more difficult then some may think,
alot of it is about timing and most people think it is easy from looking at floyd,
            it sure as hell aint!!
Watch floyds fights and alot of them....
If your serious watch them over and over you will see little things,
Now i know i just said to you dont copy anybody but i do rate the philly shell defense as the best method to use.
So i would encourage a fighter to shouler roll....

Well, if you dont have great reflexes, or fail to keep your eyes open when punches come at you, and dont have good timing with decent hand speed. You have no business learning this style.

If you do. Use your back hand to parry jabs. Again, if you dont have good reflexes your pretty much assed out because you will jump the gun with the parry and eat leather. Use your forward shoulder to roll straights, pretty easy but this is where your eyes come in. If you can't time and you dont keep your eyes open, your going to fail and eat leather on the chin. Dont try to roll hooks because you will fail, from no side. Dont worry about body shots, the placement of your arms block every thing.

Now this is the second most important part. If you dont have decent hand speed, your gonna fail miserably at this style. Because you need to counter just as fast as you roll or block. There are different things you can do, depending on the block/roll, but we aren't in gloves with pads so I can't show you.

The last part is KNOWING RANGE. Too many idiots think they know what their doing and think their being flashy by using the style from afar. "Oh ****! I blocked your hook with my right hand from mid to outside rang with my left hand down! Yeah, i'm the ****!"
NO. Thats using it wrong. You use this style in the pocket/phonebooth/corner/ropes. Everything is so compact that when they throw anything, you just have to shift an inch and you roll or block their attack.

Dont be afraid to lean, particularly on hooks. Because you can't roll a hook fromt he back side. You have to lean over. If it's from the front side, you can try to block or you can just smother your opponent by jumping into their body.

It's a difficult ass style. Where if you dont have the natural ability, no matter how much you train or practice this style. You wont get anywhere with it. Eyes, Reflexes, Hand Speed, Timing. All that, if your missing even one, you wont succeeed with the style.

                Eyes: Can't see, you can't do ****.
Reflexes: How can you roll, block, or parry without it?
Hand speed: How can you counter without it?
Timing: You have to know when and when not to do something.

Your face is wide open. You need all of these things to be successful at it. Not to mention, staying calm.

Hopes this helps somewhat. I have explained it so much that, I think I just skimmed through explaining this one. sorry if it dont help.

I wouldn't advise trying to emulate Floyd or Toney; both fighters have extremely fast reflexes which enable them to utilize the shell. Whitaker is a southpaw emulating him would be neigh impossible if you’re an orthodox fighter. Learning the shoulder roll is very difficult because from my experience not many people can do it correctly.
