Seems to me that a boxer/puncher is the way to go. Brawling's good out on the street. I'd define Tyson as a boxer/brawler, cus he did have some looping power shots.

We were just talking about Diaz being a boxer/brawler.

It has to do with the explosiveness of the punch. Hamed had power and speed, he was very explosive. If you look at Cotto, his shots hurt, but they're not very fast. It's usually the punches you don't see coming that knock you out. There are guys who are fast like Malignaggi, but they don't have power. A excellent genetic combination of speed and power will make a one punch puncher. They're a rare breed.

Punchers can knock u out in any round.

Ricky Hatton & David Diaz are brawlers but not punchers.

So no, brawlers & punchers are not always the same.
You kidding man? Gatti was a huge puncher. That was what won him many hard, close fights. One punch and out.

Go and check out his early fights. He was a big puncher, all left hook.

Anyway, on topic, a puncher is quite simply someone who relies on his punch to win fights, not his boxing. He won't win fights with his boxing, he will win them with his punch, hence a puncher.

For a big puncher think Hearns, Julian Jackson type fighters who have one punch KO power. Margarito I wouldn't consider a big puncher because his KO's usually come from accumulation.

if you mean a pure puncher, it's more about what you don't do. George Foreman was a pure puncher. He didn't do much clever boxing, and he didn't charge in and throw lots of vicious combinations like frazier or tyson. He just had monstrous power.

Pure puncher = big power, little clever boxing, little aggressive infighting.

puncher = anyone with power, term sometimes interchangeable with pure puncher, or used in combination like boxer puncher or fighter puncher or boxer fighter puncher
