  • How to fight on the inside

I just want to ask you guys how do I fight an Inside fight?

The type wherein you almost clinch and throw short hooks and uppercuts?

Cause what happens to me Is my sparring partner/coach/trainer hits me with endless combos at first he goes to my body so i lower my guard then hits me in the head and when I protect my head he goes down again.

What do I do to stop him from doing this?

stand in close to him, hands and elbows up and bending your knees slightly from there you just fire off short hooks and uppercuts, to both the head and body. i like to throw a few close shots then step back and come over the top with long shots

and as for when hes attacking and making you lower your guard, first of all make sure your hands and elbows are in tight and close to you and you are looking at him, and secondly dont let him just throw at you and dictate what you are doing, fire back at him as he is punching at you, what i mean is cover up, and then try and catch him as he throws punches or after he throws punches and leaves himself open, then move away so he cant counter you

putting together combinations on the inside takes experience and practice so don't be too discouraged by your trainer giving you a whooping on the inside.

like Kostya says stay tight with your guard.. elbows in and gloves up and you really should be able to role and catch most punches..

offensively.. look to punch out of rhythm.. double the lead hand.. and work the body.
uppercut is a great punch to land but you have to set it up..

look to pivot and weave to create angles..

Thanks for the tips guys. And 1 more thing my trainer likes to do is hit me with an uppercut to the body and I dont know how to defend against is cause my arms are at the side

First you have to establish what you want to do on the inside once you get there. Are you trying to stay there? Do you want to get out and establish a more comfortable distance? Do you want to use that in-fighting distance to set up counter punching opportunities?

If you are on the inside and want to stay there, you need to change your way of thinking when it comes to head movement and defense. On the inside you want to shell up when they are on the attack but keep moving to roll with punches and create opportunities to counter or establish punch initiative/ punch priority. (by this I mean using the recovery window of an opponents punch to set up a counter offense.) You want to use short jabs and lead into hooks and uppercuts, use your jab to set up your combos and to create space. bob and weave to get out of the way of those hooks and be ready to roll under the right hook(if orthodox, left hook if southpaw) and create angles on that side. short hooks and uppercuts are the order of the day. Threaten with them to put the opponent on the defensive then start your combos and create angles.

i remember you were agreeing that you were having problems watching the punches. dont rush it man and youll eventually be able to see whats coming. once your eyes are trained you wont have problems blocking or dodging combos. if you know that he likes to throw combos and is always switching arms every punch like left right left right left then when he starts the combo say with a left block with your left side what is called combing your hair when you bring your left hand just above your left ear and pivot slightly to your right and do that the opposite direction for the next punch and so forth. it blocks the straight punches and uppercuts that may come. very hard to explain if you dont know what im talking about heh but good luck. i would honestly say to master the basics before you start trying to fight with a certain style. once you have a good grasp on the basics and your distance then you can start finding your style.

keeps hand on chin to block twist your hips and lean sideways to lower your elbow to guard the body.

Sounds like you have short-arms. Well, the only thing to do is make yourself compact, don't stand straightwhen he's inside diggin' punches. Make yourself a smaller target.

For example - If your trainer is throwing a right hook to your body, you're gonna wanna bend your torso on your left side, so your elbows are covering your body and your glove is covering up the right side of the face, be careful and watch out for the uppercut after he throws the hook.

As soon as he lands his hook to your body, i'd counter right away, with either an uppercut or a straight or left hook .

If only I had the energy he couldnt hit me with so many shots inside but because im out of energy I cant throw a good punch anymore and I tend to curl up and regain stamina.
