  • Video: Defense drills.

Just testing my new HD Camcorder. First time I have worked my defense in a while. I haven't sparred since my last fight in September, and I'm not happy with how I look. Ive been picking up some bad habits like moving my head with my back instead of my hips, not moving my head after throwing right hands, dropping my hands when throwing hooks, etc... I'm also not happy with my jab. I am picking up my elbow too much. If anyone notices anything else feel free to let me know.

I know its just training but I would suggest you give up the Philly Shell. Yes it looks beautiful but you will get picked apart in the pro level using that. Its very hard to master bro and the way your using it, I can tell you right now that isn't the way you use it. Your trainer has you using the roll and such from far off when the roll is actually used from the pocket. Meaning if you dont have superior athletic abilities you will get beat up and in a bad way.

Its not my thing to discourage people in any shape or form. However I thought it would be beneficial if I let you know about it. Because alot of trainers do just go through the motions of the philly shell just to squeeze some green out of your pocket. From what I seen in this video, that is what it looks like. Maybe you will use this information to your advantage and earn to use the philly shell properly and hone it perfectly.

However, once you get into the habit of doing certain things. It can ultimately be your downfall and you may never get where you dreamed of in boxing because of those habits. Unless you have the heart of a mexican. So, using the philly shell without the proper skills, abilities, and knowledge can be your downfall.

really good clarity on the camera tho.

        Hilarious.

The padwork was pretty good. I know you try to focus on being relaxed but I would like to see more aggression and snap in your punches. At the start your left jab was a little lazy but you picked it up later.

im not sure how americans feel about this but.......
im sure people from english gyms will agree that......

your padwork looks slow and soft, ur punching at like 20%power and your trainer is throwing these really slow motion wide hooks at you, it dosent look like a work out at all and looks as if you could do it all day,

There are different ways to do pads. The one you're talking about sounds like conditioning a la Ricky Hatton. What Shawn was doing in this one was with an emphasis on technique (which I personally prefer, conditioning is easily done a hundred other ways, but technique is best taught on the pads).

That said, I completely agree with Flicker on the philly shell. If I was in the opposite corner, Shawn would get hit with a lot of right hands, as he is setting himself up for them (with the help and approval of his trainer, apparently...). The way his trainer throws that lazy right hand is not the way a right hand will be thrown in a fight, and if a good fighter sees Shawn reacting the way he does in this vid just once, he'll tag him with a big right the next time. There are many easier, more effective ways to defend yourself...

Shawn you are doing it fine, but thats just too slow. And babes, shoulder roll is nice, but it is really only useful when you got perfect footwork, if you are fighting someone with a pulse that is.
But thats just my personal opinion

And to add to that, I really think that bobbing and weaving is a much more effective way to protect yourself, especially it the early stages of boxing.

lol, drills are not meant to be like super fast and super powerfull all time.. there are times for that thing and times slowing it down to focus more on the proper technique, form and footwork.
