Been boxing over 3 years now and just recently I've started getting pretty bad knuckle sores and grazes that are just scarring up my knuckles badly in the long-term.
I'm thinking it's because my knuckles arent strong/tough enough, so first off I'm asking for any advice on how to improve the strength of my knuckles. I've heard about hitting the top of a bucket full of sand and other things but I dont want to completely **** my knuckles because I have fights coming up.
However, I'm not 100% sure this is the case so if anyones got any alternative reasons that might be the cause of it or any advice then I'm all ears.
Cheers.
Yeah, my knuckles have been sore lately. I put some sponges on my 'knucks to get extra padding. I also soak my hands in ice once in a while when they're really sore.
Feels good though doesn't it? It just means we're hitting harder.

Or incorrectly or with bad gloves or hand wrapping techniques.
i am not sure how a bucket of sand would do anything for hardening of knuckles specifically.
there is a time tested methods that use gradual conditioning. mikiwara boards will help calcify your bones, but there are safer, better ways in my opinion. the better ways, in my opinion as i know people who do them, take time and do not cause deformation in the hands. the methods do greatly increase the thickness of the skin and density if bones as well as fibres of the hand. being hit by a conditioned hand makes it feel more like a sledgehammer instead if a rubber hammer as best as i can describe.
I just asked the exact same question to Derek Roche the 3 times British Welterweight Champion.
I've put the video on youtube for you so you can see how he wraps his hands for protection during training. I know there's a shed load of crappy videos on youtube showing you how to wrap your hands but most are posted by people who never even boxed. In my opinion it's always worth asking a genuine world class boxer (if you happen to have one to hand - hehe) The way Derek does his is a little bit different to most that I've seen and worked wonders for me when I was training, it almost felt like I had a new pair of hands and lots more power. Pay close attention to the end of it when he's talking about using an old glove.
See what you think anyway, here's the link...
billolden, a safe way is to folow one of the tigers of canton's methods.
u would begin by using a bag filled of a certain type of beans and medicinal herbs with liniment. i remember that tszyu mentioned using liniment as well in his interview - he didnt want to say too much as he stated that he wanted to wait until he was well retired to release his training secrets.
you work your way up to bags filled with iron pellet. it is a slow proces where u just drop your hand onto the bags - without force only using gravity. my friend, who is a teacher in this method could elaborate more. the goal is to gradually build up the density of the hand and blood flow to it(which helps repair bruises faster).

If you truelly want more durable hands then forget that sponge, rubber pad, typical boxing stuff.
Listen to J. Iron Palm conditioning is great. The Iron Palm trait takes forever to develop though. The Iron Fist trait is significantly shorter when compared to the Iron Palm.
They are two different things though. Iron Fist is specifically the knuckles where as Iron Palm is the actual hand, the palm and the back of the hand.
Thats all im willing to release info on though. I personally dont feel right telling about the method cause its an honor thing for my teachers.
Listen to J though. He is right about the ancient chinese way. lol
