    I was always taught that we keep our chin tucked in, in order to;

    1) Protect the chin from clean shots.

    2) Decreases how much your head is rattled when you receive a punch.

    3) Protects your throat

    4) When you have your guard up it helps reduce open facial target area.

      They do that so they don't get choked out....

            I've just started sparring in the last couple of months, just nice and easy. I'm a heavyweight - on sunday I was sparring a cruiser who clipped me with a hook **** on the nose - made my eyes water and I felt slighly disorientated for 5-10 seconds. Funny thing - in the fifth round I did the same to him with a light uppercut and he stopped the session!

            A shot to the nose, even a fairly light shot, is always going to hurt and make your eyes water a bit, no? Any advice on how to protect the nose, besides generally maintaining a good defence?

                A couple months ago i was sparring my coach who is about 50 - 60 lbs heavyeir than me (im 5"8 139, he's like 6"1 190) anyway we got in real close and i landed some good shots and then suddenly BAM right hook, everything went black, i could feel my mouthguard leave my mouth and my legs went limp. Somehow i managed to catch myself before hitting the floor and brought my guard up and lasted through the round.

                  Well if your really a boxer, you know youv been rocked.
                  I was sparing a friend at the gym. He was a golden gloves contender and he is a fast little **** like 5'1 or 2 and like 112, Im 5'9 136 Im tall and lanky. so I was popin my jab and getting a little ****y. I threw it he slipped came under and hit me with an uppercut hook combo. When he hit me everything just stoped and got dark but then in 1-2 seconds I could see again. My head ****ed back from the uppercut then his hook connected with my jaw. I got all squinty and my legs felt weak, but I wasnt gonna go down. bottom line is I got ****ing rocked. but I guess it just makes you better

                  sorry for the disorderly paragraph. I forgot some parts of it
