  • Thinking In The Ring

i still have the problem of not thinking when im on the floor doing padword or in the ring. i m starting to wonder if when i get into a altercation or my first match if ill resort back to streetfighting or make mistakes that cause me to get dropped. what can i do to remember everything im taught? i usually remember 2 things when im supposed to remember 5 and those two thing i usually forget halfway thru the round and i get tired. what can i do to stay calm and keep my head right?

Resorting to brawling in an altecation would be follish. Nowadays I just use my jab in brawls because it is that easy, and there is no need to risk hurting the right hand! Just keep practising until the moves become automatic. Think fast and box fast. you need to think on your feet and it will come with practice. First you need to learn how to box and master all the basic moves.

the more you learn the more you will think instead of being a brainless brawler... When i get someone on the ropes i used to smother my own punches .. now i think 'take half a step back get some distance and throw and watch for the counters'.. I just starting 5 months ago now im sparring 2 or 3 times a week and im starting to time things like my opponents jabs.. i try to mix up my rhythimn so they cant really time me..

Go with your instincts and just fight! it seems like you're just psyching yourself out for no reason. Relax. If you can't think too much use your instincts. Eventually with experience it will become one with your thinking.

I can actually give you the perfect answer for this. You don't have time to think when you are in a fight, you should be able to make decisions effortlessly. How do you do this? Practise. Over and over and over and over and over. If you learn a punch, drill on it thousands of times until you can do it perfectly without thinking. It might actually take several weeks of doing this every day until it suddenly kicks in. The same goes with feetwork and defensive moves. You can't just get in there and start sparring, you need to have people throw you controlled punches so you can defend effortlessly. If you train hard, the sparring will actually be the easy part.

thank you so much. because i sparred for the first time today and looked terrible. i had practiced none and never had people throw punches at me and it showed. i was awkward as hell i kept my arm down and couldnt time my jab and distance for **** and i didnt know how to come in. so shadowboxing daily is the key and straight practice?

That is it. And focus on one thing at a time. You won't learn everything at once, and remember you are training your body to act in ways that are the opposite to what you have been doing since you were born, so it is going to take a while to develop skills.

Whatever you do, get someone to throw light, slow controlled punches at you and practice your defense. You can imagine someone throwing punches, but it just isn't the same.
