Yeah you'd be pretty much dead I would think minimum is 3-5% depending on genetics

Mine is 14.1% at the moment which is shocking for me. Should come down quickly though as I am restarting training after a long lay off due to injuries.

no one can be at 1.8% body fat surley????

i also thought 3% was the minimum...and look at boxers like david haye.
he was ****ing ripped for the enzo fight and he said on setanta he was at 8% bodyfat.

and amir khan does not have as much definition as haye...i bet it was frank warren who told him to lie...just to make him sound like the fittest boxer on the planet!!

5% is something you would see on world class bodybuilders.
3% is borderline lethal and can be maintained for very short periods of time.

As for me I am comfortable at around 9.5%. I have a six pack, but I dont look like something from another planet.

I bought a caliper today and measured to get an official percentage. It turns out that I am 17%. Definately not where I want to be. I'm going to shoot for 5% in the next 6 months. Not sure how realistic this is but I really want to be cut up. I did the math and with 5% body fat I would weigh about 145lbs (i'm 5'10'').

the caliper came with a chart and for my age group (21-25) 5% bodyfat is right in the middle of the lean category. I'm currently towards the better end of the average range. So I have a lot of running, better eating & working out to do.

Calculators do not always get it right! You need fat monitor scales taht send electronic impulses through your fat. 19 is OK. 15 is ideal. If you go over 25 you're getting fat. Mine is 17 and I am pretty lean and fit.

Does anyone know where i can get a fat % caliper at? Around how much do they cost? Like 3 years ago I think I was 23% but I have lost around 35lbs since then so im curious what i am now.

be careful- i have been considering fighting 178 instead of 165. with 4.6% body fat (plus id have to lose another 7 pounds), my ribs are kinda exposed and i took a hell of a shot 3 weeks ago that i felt for like 2.5 weeks. i could barely do situps or pullups for the first week, though i did em anyway. i mean, im trying to get my d on point so im not getting hit in the ribs, but a little fat is good. i've been taking extra fish oil lately...

also 5% is not in the middle of the lean category. it is the very bottom (meaning the lowest of the 5-8% range) of the elite athlete range. the target for your age group is 12-15% for the average joe trying to get in shape. those are the percentages we go by at Crunch Gym in NYC where I am a PT. fyi, you can have more body fat than the 5-8% and still looked ripped. someone who is really stripped down to make weight, like paul williams is probably like 3.5-4%. 3% is essential body fat. anything less is considered dangerous- anorexic-low. you need fat to protect your vital organs, joints, and ribs in boxing.... perhaps aim for 152 since that is an actual weight class (if you are planning on fighting). otherwise, for junior welter youd have to get down to 141 which is pushing it... you can always add muscle mass. don't roy jones it either. get accustomed to the new body before you fight. cheers!

thanks for the info. i may shoot for 7% in that case. I'm 5'10'' so 7% body fat would translate to 147.5lbs roughly which is welterweight range. We'll see what happens, Monday starts my official drive. I'm going to chart my BMI & body fat percentage once a week so I can see progress.

Thats the problem with measurements as Landon says they can be out 2% (or more!) either way. Depends on who takes the measurements too because the methods can vary. When I did mine I was about 15% but I personally wouldnt want to lose that much more. You need to take these measurements with a grain of salt too, the thing is to be consistent with how you take your own measurements to see how much you have lost or gained, and not compare them to other peoples measurements.

Gaining muscle while losing fat at the same time is meant to be impossible, (but probably exceptions?).

Somehow I don't see you going below 0% anytime soon... At 170 lbs, you have 7.14 lbs of BF, having to lose 5 of those pounds. Possible, theoretically, but hardly realistic, and definitely not healthy, much less smart for fighting!

4.2% is already freakishly low, to the point of being unhealthy if you walk around like that for an extended period of time. In short, I think you're full of it... (you're welcome to post pics to prove otherwise)
