I have justed started going to a new gym here in Ecuador coached by a Cuban trainer and the boxers here all spar with 12oz as well. I had to go out and buy some gloves for sparring and asking around I to find out the size I learned here 12oz is the norm as well which was surprising.
Though I havent seen any hard sparring yet though, I will see tomorrow when I get to try out my new gloves a(nd headgear). I bought them straight out of the workshop of the guy that makes them (who happens to be the national coach and his son) so got to see how they make them.
By the way, the 10,12 & 14 oz were basically the same the weight is changed only by sewing in weighted ball bearings to the wrist part.
Heres some pics, the gloves were $35 and the headguard $24. Feel and look to be very good quality and the headguard fits perfectly.
