How long before training should you eat meals? Im asking this because i've recently joined an Kenpo club that starts their training at my dinner time so my meal routine is ****ed up and i get REALLY hungry/weak during training so i would like to know how long it takes for the body to digest stuff like pasta, rice, meat and sausage, Also, what should you generally eat after a workout?

A meal would probably be best consumed at least 1.5 hours before training. Some kind of snack like a banana would probably be alright an hour before training - probably even 30 minutes.
I think it really depends on your metabolism, which is different for everyone. I know that personally I can consume a meal, and have to take a **** about 20 minutes later (and become hungry again). Maybe I have a fast metabolism - I don't know.
Since your training is starting in the evening, I would recommend eating rice for lunch as it provides more long-term energy that you would use to not be so hungry during your workout. Maybe have some oatmeal and a banana before you go train, if possible.
Post workout I would have just a banana. If that's your last big physical exercise of the day, you don't really need too much food for energy, as you'll probably be going to sleep pretty soon afterwards. If you must have something, I would make it very light - some raw vegetables, and maybe a piece of very lean meat if you must. I wouldn't eat carbs after your workout - unless you don't really care too much about weight loss.
Hope this helps man.

Maybe I didn't make it clear; if your goal is to lose weight, I don't suggest eating carbs after your workout because most likely it will end after 6 or 7 (if it starts near dinner time). If weight isn't an issue for you, then yes, carbohydrates and protein should be eaten after your workout.

What's Carbs? Post Workout meal? o_O... Im a bit new to these slangs so please go easy on me :X the club starts around 6:30 PM on wednesdays and is about 60-80 minutes long so i need something that lasts around that time and some info on what i should eat after a workout aswell. Also, i would like to note that i'am an allergic to almost all fruits and vegetables so i can't just really take some for a snack. Also, i read something about rice that it absorbs the water in your body, that can't be too good to eat if you're going to sweat alot soon or can it?
And please, try not to start any argues orelse this whole thread will go straight down the. All help and tips are appreciated and should preferabley go un-discussed. Amen
:
EDIT: My main goal is to loose weight and get my body as fit as possible to the sport cause i will probably try the competing stuff later on. Once again, All help is greatly appreciated and shall be rewarded with +karma.Last edited by Coeco; 07-23-2008, 10:58 PM.

If you want to be able to workout often and not feel sore as hell the next day then you need carbs and protein after a workout despite the time.

your an odd one...lol...but i agree with both of them...in a since...
it depends on your metabolism what you eat and can eat before a work out....
try to eat six or so small nutrient packed meals that way your body doesnt get full but it doesnt lose fuel or get hungry...
i usually space them about three hours apart for me...
and drink lots and lots and lots of water...
that is my advice...
im getting fitter by the day...due to boxing...and a lot of cardio and semi-dieting...
its hard to do it right all the time....sometimes i slip up..but hey im human...
and i love food...but i do alright...
but i wouldnt eat up to two hours before a work out...
and never eat to the point of sleepiness lol.

And isn't it like really tricky to have like 6-8 meals a day o_o? i can barely keep my breakfast, lunch and dinner.. and is vegetables really a must? >.> can't i have like 4 times rice and 4 times pasta? :-0Last edited by Coeco; 07-24-2008, 12:06 AM.

You can eat whatever food you want. Just make sure you get enough protein, essential fatty acids, and take a multivitamin. Also make sure you are taking in the right amount of cals. I wouldent recommend going over 2000 if you are trying to loose weight.
Now on the other hand if you care about your performace in the ring I would recommend eating alot of whole grain foods to provide yourself sustained energy throughout the day. Veggies also are very important to ensure that you receieve all the nutrients a multivitamin can not provide.

I wouldn't eat a meal before training, I ate 2 hours before training once, I was certain that it'd be fine by then. I was so slow, tired and sluggish by the first bit. Digesting a meal takes up a great deal of blood supply which makes it very difficult to do exercise. Try eating a banana and 1 or 2 cereal bars about 40 mins before. Don't buy the bars which have chocolate or stuff in them, it's so funny watching people eat them thinking they're being healthy not knowing they prob' have as much sugar as a chocolate bar haha. Try get ones which are just stuff like nuts and dried fruit stuck together with honey and then baked. Those 2 things will keep you happy until training is over and will supply a good supply of slowly released energy. Wait about an hour after training to eat as your body needs the blood supply to repair the stress on the body. Problem is you end up eating quite late.
