I don't know who is training you but obviously you are getting some bad advice. Boxing 101: chin down, guard up, move your head. If you "can't see **** coming" that means you aren't doing the basics.

also problem might be standing to square on. that still one of my problems after i throw a right hand i don't turn straight back to the proper stance

No thats what happens when u try to use the shoulder roll technique and ur not fast enough to utilize it

You can do shoulder rolls with your guard up. In any case, Gatti prefered to block punches with his head. It's one of the attractions of Philly Shell.
