I don't know who is training you but obviously you are getting some bad advice. Boxing 101: chin down, guard up, move your head. If you "can't see **** coming" that means you aren't doing the basics.

You can do shoulder rolls with your guard up. In any case, Gatti prefered to block punches with his head. It's one of the attractions of Philly Shell.
LOL yes you are very right on that its alot smarter to keep that left hand up, my coach tells me that over and over again cause I have a habit to drop it, I end up paying for it...
Yea I always kept my hands up right next to my face but that shouldn't cause you to not see your opponent throw a punch. Just keep moving. You should be able to watch their body language for signs a punch is coming. Especially a hook.
jadagod is probably right with the stance thing. I don't know why you wouldn't be able to see you opponents punch. Make sure chin is down and stance is correct.
