The first time I got punched in the face really hard in sparring, I cried like Nancy Kerrigan. I cried so hard I threw up in a corner trash can. I was 35 years old.

The guy who had hit me came outside and told me, "I wouldn't have hit you that hard if I didn't think you were man enough to take it."

      Changed my life.

Cant really say I've had any experiences as such, but something thats turned me around was when my coach phoned me and told me that I'm under achieving for the talent and potential that I have. Since that phone call I've been a completely different person when sparring.

During one session (Vale-Tudo), i was put up against a guy who had like 4 more yrs experience, it weren't a real match just like a training session but everyone thought i was going to get tapped, submitted or just knocked out easily but i fought like i had my life riding on it, and eventhough i lost i was congratulated by everyone like i had actually won, everyone was shocked... That made me believe and want to train even harder...

              Not joking at all.

I got into this sport precisely because it was something I was terrified of, and something I wanted to overcome. That's me in the white shirt in my avy; it should give you some idea of how far I've come.

EDIT: This is where I got my username from -- being scared of getting hit.

Jeez, I never knew that. Massive respect for your honesty by the way and also for getting involved in something which terrified you. How do you feel now when you get hit.

I'm only a year younger than you and looking to join a gym this year once I get my fitness levels up. I joined a gym when I was much, much younger, about 9 or 10 but didn't last all that long, I remember I couldn't control my anger at being hit - I found it hard to keep myself from kicking the other guy! Och, I was only young!!!

Once I learned to separate the physical pain of being punched from the emotional and psychological aspects of being punched, I found it wasn't nearly as bad. Every now and then I'll take a shot that really hurts -- nose, liver -- but a punch in the face is an intense prickling sensation, followed by numbness. A bloody nose feels like a runny nose. It doesn't even bother me; it's kinda cool to now get hammered upside the head and have my main thought be, "****, I gotta work on that."

Join now. Don't put it off. Your fitness levels will go up. Amateur leagues used to have an age cutoff at 34, but there is now a USA Boxing Master Division for fighters 35+.

Tell us about it. I've been involved in my fair amount of fights while growing up, once where my nose was broken with a kick to the face. So, it's not like I've not been involved in dust-ups.

Yeah I know that a gym will get me fitter quicker than I can on my own but for my emotional well-being I'd rather join the gym when I personally felt physically able to. I'm aiming for the start of June this year, I feel I'm physique-wise not too bad - the fat has came off, my strength and muscle power has improved, the abs and core are strong (though not too defined as of now) - it's just the fitness and stamina levels I need to work on & I've started that with my running program. Would love to aim to be an amateur but I'm not getting ahead of myself seeing as I haven't even joined a gym yet! Also, I'm from the UK and don't know what their cut-offs are. (35 this December btw).
