  • Eating punches

this probobly sounds ****** but i thought id ask anyways . ( im a serious newb when it comes to sparring and training , like weeks into it , mostly just spar for the fun of it . ) so the other day me and my friend whos also pretty new to the whole boxing thing were hittin the bags , doin some basic trainin and w.e so for fun we decided to jump in the ring a spar for a bit. i put on head gear he didnt so naturally i was only gonna body punch him just cause i didnt wanna be cheap .

so anyways he only hit me good twice , the rest i mainly blocked . one was an uppercut that hit me on the forehead , didnt really hurt but i definately felt him connect .

the other one however was pretty much a flush right hook to the temple , now pretty much my question is does anyone else actually enjoy eating a huge shot and jus shruggin it off and smilin in a guys face after ? it almost feels as satisfying as actually landing the punch . sort of like validating your chin or whatever? ( granted i was wearing headgear , ****ty anceint headgear at that lol )

On one hand, it's nice to know you can take a punch as it eliminates some of the initial fear of stepping into the ring, but on the other hand a ****ty defense is nothing to be proud of. I'm desperately trying to learn and incorporate more head movement and the ability to keep distance with my jab and how to set up combos because I'm tired of getting tagged constantly. Over time it gets discouraging to continue to step into the ring and get ****ing serviced. Trust me, taking huge shots gets old quick.

im in the same boat as you bein new new and all. I like it when im hit with a good shot and can shrug it off but dont get too proud or you may feel like you dont need to protect yourself. Its equally satisfying to slip a punch with bad intentions and make THEM swallow their teeth, actually more satisfying.

well yes i think you put it best , it was pretty much what i was trying to get at . of course you dont WANT to get hit , but like you said eating that big punch and being able to feel ok , no wobbley , not rocked , jus shrug it off and keep on going , its a good feeling . i think you said it right , it just helps eliminate that initial fear of getting hurt real bad .

this was especially nice considering , a friend of mine trained boxing for 2 years , hes waaay smaller than me , heck even a few yrs younger , im overweight right now ( by my standards at least ) and hes in like tip top shape so naturally he was MUCH faster than me . he was pretty much the first time i ever sparred , it was extremely discouraging for the main reason that he hit me pretty damn hard in the jaw while i was tired and breathing heavily though my mouth ( like i said im in bad shape right now ) and i continued to fight until the end of the round . after the round was over my jaw hurt , like it was really akward and i felt alot of disconfort when trying to chew .

just this alone almost put me off boxing then i looked at the facts and figured more than anything , hes good , i ****** and though it really hurt my jaw this time i dunno if this is an extremely common thing ?

so i was just wondering about your experiences starting out ? anyone thoughts and stories.

I don't like getting hit until I actually do - then I like it.

I have found that there are few things in life as satisfying as having someone throw a big punch at me and miss.

I love that too, slipping punches is my favourite thing to do. Shows that you can move faster than he can throw a punch, gets demorolising if they miss a few in a row.

im gonna have to agree with this statement. i do everything in my power not to get hit. i do anything i can (legally) not to be hit. its better to make him miss and smile in his face than take a huge shot and smile in his face, because they say if u smile at him and taunt, it means u know u got hit BIG and u got hurt...
