I do both when I train but I feel that the focus pads allow me to do more. I can't really work on uppercuts like i'd like to with the heavy bag and plus when you're working pads you're actually physically pressing in on someone who also has the ability to slap you in the face giving you a friendly reminder to keep your hands up. I guess I'm really just looking for everyone's opinion. Is there a need to do both? Is it better to focus on one more than the other and if so why? I'm just asking because I honestly don't know and would like to find out so I can focus my energy where it's gonna to provide the best pay off.

pad work is ESSENTIAL imo. i do pad work every day and i work the bag once maybe twice a week. i personally dont see the bag as an absolute necessity like sparring and pad work and conditioning and shadowboxing and stuff. some guys opinions will differ, but me personally, if i didnt hit the heavy bag at all, it would not make me worse of a fighter. IMO...

IMO...No heavybag,no power increase.Simple as that.

Plus its more likely you can get more time on a heavybag then pad work.Unless the guy works exclusively with you, which would mean you guys do like 6 rounds of mitts or more.Which I highly doubt unless you guys dont have alot of ppl at your gym.

but i heard u say before u hit the bag for like 24 rounds, which is nuts, thats crazy that u can do that, i hit the bag for maybe 6-8 rounds once a week at least, sometimes 2, but i mostly spar and do focus mitt work with my trainer, and believe me, it works jus fine for speed and power...

the heavy bag is my bread & butter. joe frazier was 'found' due to his ability to nail the bag.
