  • Focus Pads and Heavy Bag workouts

I do both when I train but I feel that the focus pads allow me to do more. I can't really work on uppercuts like i'd like to with the heavy bag and plus when you're working pads you're actually physically pressing in on someone who also has the ability to slap you in the face giving you a friendly reminder to keep your hands up. I guess I'm really just looking for everyone's opinion. Is there a need to do both? Is it better to focus on one more than the other and if so why? I'm just asking because I honestly don't know and would like to find out so I can focus my energy where it's gonna to provide the best pay off.

pad work is ESSENTIAL imo. i do pad work every day and i work the bag once maybe twice a week. i personally dont see the bag as an absolute necessity like sparring and pad work and conditioning and shadowboxing and stuff. some guys opinions will differ, but me personally, if i didnt hit the heavy bag at all, it would not make me worse of a fighter. IMO...

You're straight up crazy, thats like saying swimming and running isnt essential to boxing. No heavybag,no power increase.Simple as that.

Yeah pad work is better,it can make you more tired because the person doing it pushes you. They make you move around the ring, and throw fast combos, but the heavybag can increase your punching power, and setup your combos.

Plus its more likely you can get more time on a heavybag then pad work.Unless the guy works exclusively with you, which would mean you guys do like 6 rounds of mitts or more.Which I highly doubt unless you guys dont have alot of ppl at your gym.

mmmm... i disagree. im not saying the bag doesnt increase power or that u shouldnt use it... i was sayin padwork and sparring is more essential than bagwork. alot of fighters hit the heavy bag once or twice a week. jus an opinion man, maybe i am crazy, but i am fine without hitting the bag, and i dont hit like a *****. if ur a total weak ass puncher, yea u gotta hit the bag alot.

but i heard u say before u hit the bag for like 24 rounds, which is nuts, thats crazy that u can do that, i hit the bag for maybe 6-8 rounds once a week at least, sometimes 2, but i mostly spar and do focus mitt work with my trainer, and believe me, it works jus fine for speed and power...

the heavy bag is my bread & butter. joe frazier was 'found' due to his ability to nail the bag.

                  an hour a day. always.

Neglecting the heavybag is like not wanting to improve on your power. Most ppl wanna see ko's not decisions.Even if you're one of the hardest punchers in the world, you shouldnt neglect the bag.
