Ignore the above poster, complex starches (ie carbs) such as oatmeal, sweet potatoes and brown rice are considered the lowest on the glycemic index.Low GI foods can benefit your health and athletic performance. Being that low GI foods are assimilated at a slower rate, they supply a steadier supply of energy. Lower GI foods alleviate hunger, leading to a more controlled appetite. Selecting lower GI carbohydrates will prevent mood swings. Lower GI foods can also result in higher muscle glycogen levels (storing more carbs in the muscle), and less chance of storing the extra glucose as fat. You see elevated insulin levels can turn on your fat storing mechanisms.
My boxing friends are telling me to stay away form these foods. Is thsi true.

Ha!! That is the most bull**** advice I've ever heard!! Do your friends want you to join them on their diet of smoking crack for breakfast?
You need your complex carbohydrates. They are believing that Atkins bull****. If you are an athlete, you've got to have those good carbs.
Sweet potatoes are particularly excellent if you are trying to lose weight because they make you feel full like no other food there is. Usually I eat really big dinners. When there is sweet potatoes or yams on my plate, I can only eat half as much because they are so filling.Comment
