  • Too much protein a bad thing?

I know most fighters will tell you that a good diet to build strength and muscle must be high in protein. How much protein is actually needed? I saw some articles on the internet that say too much protein can cause liver, heart, kidney and bone problems, and that athletes should consume normal amounts of protein but higher amounts of complex carbs to fuel their workout.

Thoughts? What is a good amount of protein for a boxer to incorporate into his diet?

yes too much protein is bad. you should always take in more carbs than you do protein or else it affects the type of shape your in. For example if you take in more protein than you do carbs, you'll notice your endurance ain't up to par. And a good amount of protein depends on your weight

A mate of mine whose big into body building told me to make sure I drank plenty of water to flush my kidneys regularly since I'm taking Creatine and Protein.

How much protein is recommended? I have read that 1g per pound of body weight is good. Is that too much or too little? How much protein does everyone here eat daily?

if your over 200lbs you shouldn't be taking as much protein as someone between 175-190lbs. They say you need 1g per pound but personally i say that is BS. They recommend that much only so they make more money. You got to understand that all the protein you take in won't be used for the body unless it HAS to be. What i mean by this is if you work out and don't get sore, you don't need to be taking much protein. But if you go at it intense every time you train/lift then you just take about 10g less of protein than is recommended for your weight. That works the best in my opinion. 1 more thing, if I take 60grams of protein as a supplement daily(I weigh 165-173), then if you weigh over 200lbs you should be taking about 40-45g as a supplement

very very incorrect info. ur sayin if u dont get sore after a workout u shouldnt eat as much protein?? thats a ridiculous statement my friend no offense but that is jus plain ******. u can eat mad protein and still get sore, or eat little protein and not get sore, the two are not at all correlated with each other. protein rebuilds the muscles u tear when working out, lifting weights or whatever u do that is physicall demanding. that doesnt mean u dont need protein when ur not sore, it jus means ur muscle is used to the demands of the load and didnt get sore, but the fibers were still torn and they need protein to rebuild to become stronger. protein is used by ur body not when it has to be, but always. they are the building blocks of ur muscles and ur cells. without protein, u r weak, tired, sluggish, sick, out of shape, and can get diseases easier. proteins are amino acids and u need amino acids in ur body to survive. 1g of protein per body weight is what u should aim for especially if ur a fighter and work out very hard. u need ample carbs, protein, and even fats. protein is extremely important and if u want to be in good shape make sure ur gettin ur fair share...

and ur sayin that the heavier u r, the less protein u need?? dude, what the hell are you talkin about man seriously i aint bein a ****head or anything but dont give advice like that people will listen to it and it wont help them at all, it will hurt them. the more u weigh, the more protein u need. its simple math.

too much protein isnt a bad thing, but in ratio to fat and carbs it needs to be reasonable. you dont want your diet being all protein.

Everyones protein needs vary, but i imagine you would need close to 1g per lb of bodyweight if you are training regularly, and 1.5 - 2 if you are lifting heavy not to overtrain. overtraining can set you back weeks.

I know i do it on every thread, but see the book "grapplers guide to sports nutrition" it suits boxing also.
