One the coaches at my gym teaches the shoulder roll. I haven't been boxing long, but I've found it quite comfortable and a successful way of defense in light sparring.

i usually use the hands up defense and try and slip and bob and weave punches, but in certain situations i use the shoulder roll / philly shell style. i'm no mayweather or toney, but it certainly is useful in certain situations. in my experience to use the philly shell u have to hold ur head up, not really high, but high enough for ur opponent to punch at ur chin and as he punches (higher than usual if ur chin was all the way down), you roll ur shoulder FAST and his punches slide off like butter. u gotta be real fast and have near perfect timing to pull it off, but its a great D to master.

lol i like to think of my style, kind of a cross between Muhammad Ali, and Roy Jones Jr, i'm working on the footwork and the power, i seem to have the reflexes and the handspeed, but that doesn't mean i'm comparing myself to them! haha

It really bothers me when people tout the philly shell "shoulder roll" like it makes you invincible. If you are not very fast, you will, and I place emphasis on the world WILL, get caught flush with right hands. If you want to fight in the philly shell position, I would recomend modeling your defense off of Evander Holyfeild, atleast until you become very proficient at it. He does the Philly shell, but he uses his right hand to block the left side of his face when a right hand is incoming.

There is a reason you dont see every single professional fighter using the philly shell defense. You have to be very very good to make it work well.

Hands up defense is the best defense there is. Even Floyd Mayweather used it vs Zab Judah when his philly shell failed. If punches are slipping through your hands up defense, it is because your defense is sloppy. Hands up defense doesnt only involve putting your hands up and catching punches on the gloves. It also involves taking the steam out of punches by moving your body with them. If you just put your gloves up and let people wail on you, you will fell the punches. If you use a the hands up defense properly, you cant be touched. Its why people can rope-a-dope. When you are covered up properly, you are for all intents and purposes untouchable.

You need to master the hands up defense before you try any other form of defense.

thats always been my style in street fighting, but now Im actually sparring pro boxers and my defense suck, I go right into shots and its not good takin shots when I spar heavyweights. Plus its harder to get the punches in with gloves and headgear covering up all the holes, its easier to slip a fist in than a big 16oz gloves when the glove is covering up with gloves too.

my style emphasizes a technical, but agressive approach to taken someone out. very no-nonsense type of stuff. getting straight to the point in the shortest amount of time possible. no retreating, only temporary withdraw if absolutely needed. another characteristic is owning the other fighter's space.

being agressive doesn't necessarily mean being sloppy or impatient or untechnical. defence should be offence, and offence should be defence.

16 oz gloves are big. they definitely slow you down a bit more than, say 12 oz. it's not just that bit of extra weight, but the size of them creates far more drag. can't be as accurate either. however, the upside is that you don't have to worry about getting really ****ed up by getting hit as you would with 6 or 4 oz mma gloves.

Mine kinda like that, I use a lot head bobbing a weaving though to get throught there jabs and then lotsa short compact blows and maybe a side stp so they don't know what I'm doing. I like my style as it's quick powerful and can put a lot of people down. But I know what you mean, constantly pushing foward barely moving back.

I personally think you should just try out the different types of defenses. See what works best for YOU... just do some light sparring with different people in your gym, and see what works best for you. But what do I know? I'm not an expert
