as for hooks,it has to be horizontal fist palm down anything other than that is ****ty and useless and generates no power,BOLLOCKS.

i can feel more power the way i do it...oh and not to mention..90% of the boxers in the world throw it with the thumb facing upwards...the only 1s i can think of is antonio tarver and clinton woods

pisses me off sometimes, hes making me into mikkel kessler he doesnt even like teaching us how to throw hooks and uppercuts

Some of the stuff there it is a bit strange that he would ask for such specific techniques, but every coach has there own style. At least he has attention to detail, try your best to listen to what he is teaching.

Although a lot of fighters throw a hook with the palm inward, it is very very important that you have your fist as horizontal as possible on impact. This is improtant because it is the way to get power on your hooks plus in amateur you might get called for slapping if you don't, and in amateur the WILL call you for slapping. They call things a lot more strictly than the pros.

Here's my two cents, first if you can learn from the guy learn all you can, you don't have to buy it all but while your with him get everything you can. trainers come and go so try and get what you can and then when you move on throw out the **** that you feel confident is crap. Secondly, I take advice from anyone and everyone wiling to give it. Sometimes I disagree, but then I still have to show that I'm listening and trying there way, otherwise, a) it's akward, and b) they may not be willing to give me advice in the future. On the whole I end up with a lot of good tips and some crap. It's worth it to me. so suck it up and don't fight your trainer because it's a loosing battle but keep evaluating what he says on it's merits. don't take everything as gospel. as you obviously arent.

Just knock him out!! Then be like... "told you my style was no.1 baby!! WOO!"

or... on the otherhand, just take it and do what he says. He must know something, and besides if your learning a different style, it doesn't mean that you have to forget your old one. Especially if its as effective as you say it is. Nobody boxes exactly the same, every fighter has some quirks... and every fighter has bad habits. Perhaps he's just trying to cut out what he see's as a bad habit in your arsenal??

.... oh yeah, and you should catch that jab at your chin i reckon... as for the hook, i get told to do it palm down.. .but often i throw it thumb facing north. Guess i don't listen much either.

it good that this trainer give you some tips and see your mistakes because in some gyms you got many boxers there and mostly he will concentrate on the best ones.

after you go with him sometimes he by himself will let you to develop by your own style but the first thing is the basic things

From what you have said it appears that you are a young scalawag who doesn't like to listen. When you make statements like: "90% of the boxers in the world throw it with the thumb facing upwards," it only shows how little you know about boxing. There is a natural rotation of the wrist during the trajectory of the hook thus the postion of the thumb will vary during the course of the trajectory. In the real world of boxing the thumb could be in any postion depending at what stage of the trajectory it happens to land. The reason boxing coaches teach young boxers to throw the lefthook with their thumb down and forearm leveled is to teach them to coordinate the rotation of the wrist with the rotation of the hips, thus transfering full power to the punch. I suspect that your coach has already told you this but you weren't listening, just like you aren't listening to me now.

Trying to develop your own "style" without having learned the fundamentals is a foolish waste of time.

When I was young boxing was a much bigger sport than it is today and there were many more boxers and boxing clubs. In those days it wasn't unusal for me or anybody else to get involved in boxing. I am so old I can remember my father debating with his friends about whether Floyd Patterson could have beaten Rocky Marciano. That was a long time ago!
