Its one thing to say toughen up or just use defensive skills, or whatever. Being new to sparring you may not have the skills to use... Vers knocked that guy down, but Vers is a very good boxer with a lot of experience. Your trainer shouldn't be letting this guy spar like that but if he's not doing anything about it I think you're probably right to avoid sparring this guy. It sounds like other people there can probably see what this guy is about so I doubt anyone would really think less of you. Work on your defensive skills with good partners and then when you feel like you know enough to protect yourself maybe you can spar that guy again.

TOUGHEN UP. My gym is a legitimate boxing gym and I always have gym wars. I go with people bigger than me, who are five times stronger than me, and throw bombs and I take the punishment and give some back. I leave in severe pain with swollen jaws, eyes, and neck pain, but I train harder everyday and then everytime I go back in the ring with these guys, I'm better at boxing them. Just cuz these guys go hard doesn't mean you have to take the pain. Think of a good strategy, defense, ducking, slipping, blocking, countering, footwork, moving around. Dont just automatically think you have to go toe to toe. Hell I don't go toe to toe everytime I spar. When guys go hard at me and throw Mayorga type punches, I duck em and slip em and counter the **** out of them. But you have to TOUGHEN UP. If you dont then you're just a chump. Look at Taylor, Wright, Vargas, De La Hoya, and all the other greats. They'll always tell you that at the beginning they would get beat up everyday by better fighters, then they trained and eventually became better than them. You'll never make it in boxing if you dont step up to the challenge. And whoever said "**** you to whoever said toughen up," I bet youre a chump who doesn't go toe to toe. Because if you did, you wouldn't disagree with toughening up.

you my friend, are a ****ing idiot. It's a learning experience, and if ur leaving the gym in severe pain all the time you're just hurting ur body needlessly. Keep it up, and u will end up with some neurological brain damage. You're probably tough, but what's that gonna do for you if it just allows u absorb punishment to the point where ur face is all ****ed up. Boxing4ever, don't listen to the toughen up bull****, maybe it would be fair to say if u weren't so inexperienced. No need to prove how tough you are by showing u can brawl with people. The brain is precious, and the people out there who slur their speech regret their frequent gym wars.

I guess everyone's different. Just to let you know, I went 8 straight rounds after being in the gym for just 2 months, against an eighteen year old who won ten straight fights. Sure I got my ass kicked, bad, but I'm not brain damaged and whenever I spar people my weight or a little bit bigger, they have no chance. Brawling is also a learning experience. It works more on your heart, your will, your will to risk, and your conditioning. Like I said, everyone's different.

B4E...I second the **** you to anyone telling you to just toughen up. Some situations are just not going to benefit you and this sounds like one of them. None of us know the situation as well as you do so you have to trust your own judgement and think about what you're trying to get out of this. You should have nothing to prove to anyone except yourself, so think about it and do what you feel is best for yourself.

If you're feeling intimidated because the guy hits kind of hard or is better than you're used to thats one thing and maybe you need to push yourself to overcome that. Or maybe you should overcome that by easing into it... building confidence fighting people at your level... no one can say whats right for you but you. I'm not saying thats the case, I'm just giving the case that best fits what these guys are saying....

What it sounds more like is that this guy is just going in trying to hurt people and that you don't feel your defensive skills are up to dealing with that and you don't think its helpful to spar with him. Thats completely reasonable and you shouldnt let anyone make you feel bad about that.

either my defence is good or my face doesen't swell at all because ive only got about 2 and a half months boxing experience at 17 and i showed up yesterday after a long layoff and gave lots of trouble to a 34 year old with 40
fights, and i usually spar a pro who i always seem to trouble. I seem to just get outboxed but seldom do i eat combinations, most of the time after i take 1 good punch i can cover up properly. You can test your will and heart by simply digging deep when ur very tired. Against these much more skilled guys i never get my ass kicked bad like u said u did. From what ive seen it takes a lot of flush punches for a person to look beat up and even if ur in there with someone really good you should still be able to defend yourself enough so that you mostly take 1 punch at a time. Can't you just test ur will heart and conditioning by trying to fight like ur fresh when you're actually insanely tired? You don't need to take a lot of punches IMO to test ur heart.

I don't think he's trying to take punches... why do people keep talking about how they fought this guy and blah blah blah? We don't know who you fought and we don't know who b4e fought... there's no point in making comparisons...

But if we were making comparisons maybe we would talk about the fact that an experienced 34 year old boxer probably wouldnt be trying to take some inexperienced young kids head off in sparring sessions... The issue isn't always about heart, sometimes brains can help you out too...

Throw all of your punches directly to his sternum.... Thats what I do when someone pisses me off when we're suppose to be learning... It'll air him out so quickly you wont believe it... You'll have to take a shot or too since ya seem to not know how to block hay makers... but once you hit once or twice he will be aaaiiired out.. go ahead and knock him out afterwards... then approach him about working and not starting a war. he should be more receptive...

                      Good advice.

Beat the **** out of him, and then approach him after, he will definetly be up for whatever you have to offer him after he gets a grade A ass kicking.
