  • Anyone else do this when sparring?

Whenever I find myself in a certain position or situation when I'm fighting, I often times recollect or sort of get dejavu about watching how a particular fighter would throw a punch or use his style. Ill be in the ring and in a millisecond my subconsious will picture what Im doing and relate it do what another fighter did.

For instance...Sometimes when I'll be moving in the ring thinking to throw the right and I will picture Arguello throwing a laser, twisting punch straight from the face...Or when I feel I have to use more foot movement and I start moving, then I picture Terry Norris bouncing with electric legs around the ring...or like when I have both hands up high in punching position I picture Sugar Ray Leonard's defense. Or if Im position to throw the uppercut I will mentally picture Mike Tyson throwing one for the KO...

I think this comes from watching sooooo much boxing. Anyone else get mental images like that while fighting? In essence I think it works out extremely well for me...its like I can call on a mental picture of proper techniqe at the exact time i need it.

Obviously you have never sparred. Leave this question to the men, go find a basket weaving thread.

          Yes, I have done this!

I found myself in the corner once and just as I was there I remembered what Naz did to Vazquez. He threw 4 punches... 2 straights a hook and an uppercut all that either grazed Vazquez or hit him straight through the guard. I did it against someone of less experience than me with the same technique as what Hamed did it (a lot of power to warn the opponent off) and circled out like he did. It worked and I have been visualising all sorts of different fights mid way through sparring to help me deal with situations...

Another one I remember off the top of my head was Hatton-KT. Where KT was trying to counter and Ricky drew him in then countered the counter and then rolled under a shot. I did that in sparring. He was trying to counter me so I did exactly what Ricky did. I jabbed, it drew his counter out, I stepped back, stepped straight back in with 1-2 and then rolled and circled under his left hook to my right. It was something you would see with one of these silky smooth boxers like Toney or PBF or something... really a great move.

          Works well I find.

            I do this too...
When i box cute, i end up thinking of Muhammed Ali, when I shell up I try to think of James Toney, when I flurry I end up thinking of Thai kickboxer from holland named Ramon Dekker, lately i've been working on the drop step so i picture dempsey, when i use a lot of head movement i think of frazier (and dempsey too).

Cool to see other people doing this to...It is very beneficial I think because you you are picturing an image of effective technique whenever you need it...Its not that youre emulating one person's styles (roy jones anyone? lol) its that you are taking bits and pieces of well executed punches or movements delivered by various great fighters and trying to duplicate it in the same scenario. I think this occurs mostly to students of the game, those of us who really study boxers and fights.

These images are triggered out of nowhere, its almost like taking an exam and you suddenly picture something you studied which gives you the answer.

Every great fighter "steals" things from great fighters before them.

I did it when I started. Not during sparring so much as on the bags and mitts. Soon the visualization was me doing what I do.

Every week I would come in nut hugging a different boxer and tried to imitate their style. After being absolutely demolished in sparring every week, I tried to stop. Now I have since developed my own style and it doesn't occur anymore but theres always that oppertunity you get where you wanna imitate someone.. just last week I tried to use the cross face guard cause I was feeling confident and got rocked on my big nose. :[

yes it does happen for many fighters sparring... also mean u prolly aint thinking fast enough or using enuff instinct.... try sparring experienced and world rated fighters, then u will have no time to think about other fighters.
