The word 'Yankee' has a much more specific mean than that used by Brits to insult all Americans. Roughly 20% of Americans qualify as Yanks, and where I live people mean it as a terrible insult when they call me that.
And Calzaghe-Mayweather-Pacquaio-Klitschko is how I rate the candidates as of today. Of course one of these guys has a fight left and can move up.Comment

I'm not sure if the Brits used the word "Yank" first, or if it were we "rednecks".
To my knowledge, "Yanks" or "Yankees", was first used by Southerners to insult anyone who sided with the Union in the Civil War, meaning anyone who lived north of the Mason/Dixon Line......and the Brits picked up on it during WWI; and since the "Yankees" won the Civil War, then we all became "Yanks" to the British.
Fair assessment?Comment

When I first moved to Kentucky I was surprised to find it still used, and it designates anyone with a Northeastern accent, who acts arrogantly/impatiently, etc.Last edited by kayjay; 11-17-2006, 03:50 PM.Comment

Yet MORE anti-Brit propoganda bull**** from a little boy who has NO IDEA what he's talking about. The vast MAJORITY of Lacy's opponents pre-Calzaghe were opponents Joe Blow had DOMINATED. The same Sheika that took Lacy the distance was taken out in five by Blow. Lacy's best opponents were a shot Robin Reid and a clearly terrified Scott Pemberton. Lacy had fought NOBODY of note up until the Blow fight, and was - to anyone who ISN'T a biased homer, like you so hilariously are - clearly wide open to counters by anyone with movement who wasn't intimidated. It was VERY predictable that Joe would win on points (though not as impressively as he did) and it's only bigoted Yanks that can't see what's right in front of their eyes.
On the same subject, name me ONE OCCASION where I've ever said Joe Blow was an ATG for beating Lacy, or that Lacy was a top class opponent. The majority of stuff you're arguing about you're pulling out of your ass and has NOTHING to do with this thread.
You really ought to stop tarring everyone with the same ****ing brush. All your words are "they all" and "all Brits" and so on. So a % of Brits talk biased subjective nonsense? ALL boxing fans do this.. don't insult my intelligence by grouping me with others. ALL nations have "nuthuggers" (urggggggh, hate that word) including the 90% of American posters on here who were saying Lacy's **** tasted delicious for months on end.
Right.... so Lennox Lewis isn't British then? Cos last time I looked, Lewis-Tyson was the biggest fight of all time. Prick.
Calzaghe was almost stopped in the last round against a pretty washed up Chris Eubank, which was his only good name he has in his resume.Comment

Correct K-Dogg. The word derives from the name of a Dutchman, Jan Kees, who settled much of Manhattan if I recall. So as now a 'Yank' is first and foremost a New Yorker, and by extention eventually a New Englander, Philadelphian or New Jerseyan. In addition it was used to refer to anyone who sided with the union (which means mostly people native to the region between Philly and Boston).

Like I've said before - STAY OUT OF MY THREADS. I have ZERO INTEREST in getting into any disagreement with you, it doesn't entertain me in the slightest.
However, here the joke is on you, because I'm not a "Hatton fan". Roll your eyes at someone else, the MAJORITY of observers (including, ISTR The Ring magazine) had Taylor losing to Hopkins the first time round.
And I don't care what anyone says, from the second half on Hatton was generally having his way with Zoo. I'm not saying it was a good victory, a clean victory, an impressive victory... I'm just saying he was having his way.
Making a top 5 guy quit on his stool is far more impressive than getting what looked to the majority of observers - INCLUDING RESPECTED BOXING JOURNALISTS, NOT 15-YEAR-OLD KNOW-NOTHING PUNKS ON A WEBSITE - saw as a gift decision.
But the title of the thread is the fighter of THIS YEAR, not last.
Take this repetitive bickering elsewhere.
How did you score the Hopkins/Taylor fights and what was your score after 11 rounds when Tszyu quit???Comment

Robin Reid actually was robbed in the Calzaghe fight, even the British forums had polls that Robin Reid was winning, this was another reason that most Americans didn't have any respect for Calzaghe.
Calzaghe was almost stopped in the last round against a pretty washed up Chris Eubank, which was his only good name he has in his resume.
None of which relates to Diego's assertion that people who thought Joe Blow would win must automatically be a "homer". In another post earlier (not on this thread) Diego contradicted himself by referring to the fight as a "50-50" fight going in...Comment
