Rumours have reached ********.com that IBF/WBO super-middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe has been lined up to fight reality TV star Peter Manfredo Junior in February.
The fight will be held in the UK and broadcast in the US by HBO.
Manfredo is well-known in the US, having come in runner-up in the first series of the boxing reality TV show 'the Contender'. The 26-3 (12KOs) Rhode Island native was beaten by Sergio Mora in the $1million finale and then again in a closer rematch.
The 25-year-old Manfredo was actually eliminated from the Sugar Ray Leonard hosted series after losing a five round decision to Alfonso Gomez; however, when another contestant was forced out due to illness, Manfredo was allowed back in and got his revenge win over Gomez.
Manfredo's biggest career win came earlier this year, when he KO'd trail horse Scott Pemberton in three rounds. But Calzaghe is a totally different league and, if the fight is signed, it is difficult to envision the Welshman having too much trouble with a fighter who has lost three of his last eight bouts.
But perhaps that is the point. When HBO subscribers got their first look at Calzaghe last month, they saw a messy 12 round brawl with unheralded Sakio Bika.
Maybe a quick win over a fighter well-known in the US is exactly what the doctor ordered for Joe...
Interesting news.
