I know this is boxing, but I just don't get it....

How can a commentator go Floyd's entire career bashing him for not fighting like a Gatti or Ward? Floyd knows when he can try to walk his opponent down for a knockout (Judah, Mitchell) and he knows when he needs to be serious and just box to win and look impressive (Castillo II, Corrales, Baldomir).

I don't remember hearing a lot of bashing for Pernell Whitaker for being a light punching stylist.

Also, even Manny Steward has gone on about Baldomir being Floyd's toughest test in his mind. The second Floyd win's the fight easier than SOME expected, that SOME of people do the typical boxing thing of discrediting the win. Baldomir even came in at 162. Floyd was a legit SMALL Jr Middleweight fighting a big Middleweight. Floyd has a great defensive style, but he will also go shoulder to shoulder and take some body shots.

I know it happens all of the time in Boxing, but Mayweather being my favorite it itches me more right now.

You can go back to Floyd's early fights and Merchant is spitting the same crap about Floyd not being an exciting fighter.

Baldomir is the one who couldn't do anything. It's like it's a crime that Floyd can make potentially dangerous opponents look not so dangerous or average.

I guess I don't hear them NOW when they assess his legacy.

I agree,u feel bad for the guy,he outboxes Baldomir for 12 rounds,a fight people said would be harder then he thought, when he does, they dont congratulate him, they put him down, what does Larry want? A Barrera vs Morales? Sorry HBO,this is the sweet science, not warzone,i mean Baldomir only landed 12 % OF HIS PUNCHES!! if that aint great defence then what is? it pissis u off when they discredit a guy for *****g on a excellent performance, luckely for me i got the English commentators, they were giving Floyd all the credit he deserves, one of the guys said he knew Larry for 30 years and he just wants 2 cause controversy

Merchant is a prick and somebody needs to shove that mike up his ass. He tries to use extreme English language with huge words nobody knows any more, he is insulting to many fighters but can't fight a butterfly and win. Then again...He does seem to be the person we love to hate. Sometimes having such a hated figure does actually make it nice in a weird sort of way. Still wish somebody would probe him with his mike.

I, for one, am a huge fan of Larry Merchant; but felt he was being a little unfair to Mayweather. Merchant used to praise Whitaker for his defensive expertise; but he did occassionally chastise him for the lack of excitement in most of his fights, which leads me to believe that he either has a problem with Mayweather on a personality level....which is entirely conceiveable, or he's speaking more as the spokesperson for HBO, who wants viewers...and most viewers don't appreciate the art of boxing as Mayweather displays it as much as they want Gatti-Ward type of contests.
