It is not universally known, it is widely accepted theory. The theory is called Migratory Theory, and has many holes in it, like many other theories such as evolution.
As for simple genetics, as genetics has become more advanced closer links have been found between Asians, Indonesians more specifically, and living hominids on the Asian continent than to living hominids on the African continent, raising the possibility of seperate evolutioary paths for at least Mongoloids and Negroids.
Again with simple genetics and evolutonary theory, if mankind started in North Africa, as the fossil record would indicate, it is just as likely that the sub-saharan Negroid race evolved the darker pigmentation in reaction to the harsher climatic conditions as it is that Europeans lost pigmentation due to a more moderate climate. The earliest known fossils of early man have been found in North Africa, in the Chadian desserts. North Africa has been largely Caucasoid in population throughout known history, while Sub-Saharan Africa is largely Negroid.
If you base migration off the earliest known fossils, then it would appear than man started out Caucasoid and evolved pigmentation and body structure to suit the climates into which he migrated. This still makes Africa the birthplace of mankind, but casts doubt on whether or not we were all once black. Of couse this is pure theory, not fact.

Discovery channel dun told you lies. The oldest human remains found were in Ethiopia and Kenya (that's right - Sub Saharan Africa). You should read up more on how melanin production works too. That's not something you get more of just migrating to a hot place as you'd like to believe.
