I was born in san jose california, i speak the spanish language, im a puerto rican american thats my heritage, my race is black with some spanish, technically its mulatto but i never go by that because it complicates things. why is this concept hard for you to understand. Why is the seperation between heritage and race hard for you to accept?

If you don't want seperation, then why not call yourself American?

I wouldn't even call you a mulatto, to me thats would mean im dissing you. Spainish lables, is not good.

What would a light black/African-American consider himself?

If i seen you walking down the street, yeah i'd assume you were black, but looking at your light skin i'd also think you have white blood in you, then finding out your were Puerto Rican it'd all make sence for your light skin color - besides that your mom or dad may be light skinned.

If this were a normal conversation, 9 times out of 10 i just say american unless i dont feel like explaining certain cultural things about myself such as the spanish language.

My dad is NOT light skinned, AT ALL. My mom is very light skinned with black hair. A light skinned black person still considers himself black because you cant really be anything else, especially in america.

Heritage only goes so far with me, i have been all over the world, i have lived in japan, england and guam being in the military and its exposed me to so many other cultures and heritages, when you have been exposed to so many walks of life and so many different things and different lands, your world view has far less tunnel vision and thats why i am the way i am today, aware of my culture, but not overtly hardcore, i dont need to be.

Do you know the Spanish were also conquared for many decades? The moors ****ed their people just like the spanish ****ed our people.

This is the last time im going to reply about this specific topic as far as the race issue because im starting to feel like im arguing in circles, i showed this thread to my own cousin who wondered herself why your going on and on when ive clarified these things as much as i can, so for the last time.

A black american is a black american, some people prefer to be called african american, some prefer black. Its all in preference, period. I dont wanna be called african american because i prefer black, its all in preference, period. If Ivan Calderon comes in this ****in thread and says "IM NOT BLACK, DONT CALL ME BLACK PLEZE THX" then thats his ****in preference, it doesnt stop me for having the BELIEF that hes BLACK, along with about a million other people.

Again imo, it seems you don't want to be an outkast to your black peers. I bet if you lived in the East Coast you'd have more pride being of Puerto Rican heritage.

i dont consider my race white with some spanish. i look at it through nationality. I am of Dominican and Salvadorian descent and thats how Im gonna keep it.

Edit: Well my grandmother is half haitian so i guess I got some african in me as well.
