Nice post John. Hope that peeps will learn lessons from former fighters of this forum and get insights that only REAL fighters can give. I say people should respect anyone who has the balls to go into the ring and fight at the risk of being maimed or even killed sometimes. My question to armchair warriors like me who are fond of insulting fighters is, "have you ever tried fighting in the ring?".
good post, but i also think your point could be expanded to people who have the discipline enough to really train a fighting art. i have yet to compete in an "official" tournament, but anyone who does and knows what good hard sparring is like and has the discipline to train 5 or more days a week should exhibit at least a formal respect to all fighters in general. i say "should" because not everyone who is a boxer or trains fighting arts does.

Great post! It takes a lot of balls for anyone to go in the ring and you don't know what is going through their mind and their physical state when they enter that ring. There are many factors at play when someone is in there, and you bring a good point; that it is much more complicated than what you see on boxrec.

He fell out of love with boxing long before he fought Barrera. It's all he'd knew since he was seven years old, it was his entire life and he got bored quite simply.

How could I not agree. Good luck to your first official bout bro and keep on training. Hey do I recognize you or what?

Yeah. He won't come back, he's promised he's going to make a comeback about 10 times in the last three years but he's still about 200lbs, hiding away in his remote mansion on the outskirts of Sheffield, studying his Koran. The fire is not there anymore, he got excited seeing Amir Khan at the Olympics, excited again seeing Ricky Hatton beat Kostya Tszyu, but really the fire, the desire, it's been dead since '98.

In the states... Sugar Ray, Holyfield, Ali, Tyson...there are MANY fighters here that you could ask almost anybody who they are and people would know them right off...Eubank? Not HERE, not at all. In the states you could go to the Golden Gloves and ask 50 eighteen year old kids who Ray, Holyfield, Tyson and Ali are and you would go 50 for 50. Eubank you would go 0-50, that's not an insult, either, it is just the way it is here. But, either way, there are random people that actually follow boxing on sites like this that wouldn't know anybody but the top of the line fighters and thats OK but it is messed up to no end that these critical type guys say these things when they don't even know who a guy like Grady Brewer was before the 2nd contender aired. They know Sechew Powell but they don't know and certainly wouldnt respect the man that most say he got a gift decision over (Brewer). THAT is the type of stuff I am talking about.

FROM NATE DOOG: "personaly i think he was a piee of **** that fought grampa,s and neva gonna be,s i do realise he beat k. kelly but barrera is a great fighter and he made him look silly does anybody else feel the same."
See, I usually don't go off.... but MAN these kinds of posts from people that are supposed to be boxing fans... do you even WATCH boxing, or study it? Or do you just follow the Barrera's the Jones's, Trinidad's, Mayweathers' etc??? I mean, do you have ANY CLUE whatsoever what it takes for guys like Tom Johnson, Manny Medina, etc., to win so many PROFESSIONAL fights? Do you not realize that just because a guy isn't undefeated, famous, a millionaire or a household name that it doesnt mean he isn't GOOD? Have you ever even really followed the careers of guys like Tom Johnson (a TKO victim of Naseem's)?? Guys like you, man, you come on here and basically insult a group of thirty or more guys by saying what you say and you think nothing of it, you have no idea of what you speak but you exercise your right to free speech by coming on here and lumping a bunch of guys together that you wouldn't even know by face if they walked up to you and stepped on your foot. I could name you twenty guys that can fight their behinds off, guys with what you would call average records, guys you would label nobody's, bums, scrubs, etc. but they are still guys that can FIGHT. You think Hamed just walked in and fought all these easy guys (in your opinion) and the results were a foregone conclusion each and every time, that the guys couldn't even hold their hands up properly or something? Basically... it comes down to fly-by night "boxing fans" that find it so easy to knock and belittle and disregard professionals...guys that truly have little to no idea what type of talent and heart, toughness etc. it takes to even be a ten and twelve round professional on that level. You look at top fighters and critique their past opposition and dismiss them so quickly and easily, you scan their records on boxrec looking for recognizable names and when you don't see them you dismiss the guys as nothing because YOU never heard of them or because they don't have a record as shiny and glossy as would need be for you to even rate them. Get mad if you want to but it is TIME that someone stepped in and straightened this craziness out at least one time.... you can't just look at boxrec and think you have gained some real insight into a fighter, his opponents, their records... the things you really need to know aren't things you can read on a bout sheet or a record on some website. Have SOME respect at least for a ten and twelve round fighter, a guy that has fought in more fights than you have even watched.
Great Post, too bad alot of guys don't appreciate the amount of work put in by hard men who've managed to get to a place very few have the heart to achieve, they just aren't the greatest, but to just excel at boxing takes a certain amount of greatness that very few people have. I know there's alot of guys like me who still recognize & give respect to those who have earned it. Great post Iceman.

My thoughts exactly, but it doesn't make it any less true.
