Dempsey had the same sized torso as Tyson and huge VERY strong shoulders. Look carefully at that picture and you'll realize that Dempsey's biceps don't look big because they are being compared to his massive deltoids. He also had a very big head to go with that shoulder frame and the illusion is a slender athlete when he was really a natural heavyweight frame carved down to a lean 190 pounds. Dempsey really starved himself down to that weight by today's standards. He walked around at 210-220 pounds or more as an adult, and not a fat 220 either.

As for his skills being primitive, well Dino if you are that ignorant I don't give a **** if you put me on your list.

Dempsey was one of the all time greats, and a top five heavyweight in my opinion. He was a taller Tyson with much better inside fighting skills and more heart. Dempsey had as much courage as many man who ever fought in the ring, and lived a hard life even by a boxer's standards.

I think it's an overstatement to say Dempsey would beat anyone but he's a very, very, difficult fight for anyone who ever lived at any size.

He would absolutely BUTCHER anyone alive today. No one has the neccesary movement to avoid him. No one fighting in 2006's heavyweight division is going to beat Dempsey in close, too powerful, too quick, too short and compact with those hooks and uppercuts.

He is also not throwing 20 punches a round and looking to spar with you...there are a lot, if not most, of the people that fight, when attacked in such a manner, will fold.

I also don't want to hear this nonsense about these guys not being strong back then...these guys were incredibly strong because they did something that many do not do now, it is called "Labor"...yes, at one time "Men" actually had to use their bodies for physical work, lifting heavy objects for long periods of time.

If you look at power-lifters there muscles look different than bodybuilders, but guess who is stronger for the most part, and I am not talking about the "juicers"

Well if you have him fight today wouldn't he be exposed to the "New" developments of fighting?

Have you noticed the fighters today, they aren't exactly "talented" compared to some of the fighters in the past.

Dempsey fought guys well over 200 pounds. If he could knock those guys out, I don't see why he can't do that to some of today's fighters.

This should be in Fantasy Forum or Histoy. However, I think it is good to let the yun's know about how great Dempsey was by posting it here. Hell, he was the Ali of boxing in his hey-day, if you think about it. Flambouyant and feared at the same time.

Dempsey was TOUGH. He had experience. Hell, in 1918 alone he had seven fights listed in the selected bouts section in my copy of The Boxing Register, nevermind how ever many fights he had otherwise in that year. Granted, when he was champion his fights were considerably more spaced out, but none the less his workrate early on should alone make him competitive against fighters who especially these days fight one or two times a year. He was competitive against anyone, I'm not saying he beats everyone but he certainly could give them a solid fight.

I totally agree with everything here. Lets remember how difficult it is to compare different eras, in that time, their focus was more on conditioning since they had to fight so many rounds and fight so often. Plus, you have to keep in mind the advancements today in training techniques, supplements, etc. While Jack may have fought at 190 or so back then, he very well could have been fighting at about 215-225lbs if he were around today. Just like if a prime Mike Tyson were around then, he would probably have been fighting at like 190-195lbs during that era too.

".....the advancements today in training techniques, supplements, etc."

Why is it nobody in the heavyweight division has heard of these "advancements?"

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to dino again.

How the F is your bar blue? You are the most idiotic poster on these forums, without a doubt. Dempsey at his best, was a fighter way ahead of his time. Yeah, he fought wild at times, and loved to brawl, but he could also shoot amazingly short punches, with power, head movement, ring generalship. Watch his destruction of Jess Williard. He looked like he could have been a modern day fighter at times, bouncing in and out, moving his head, shooting beautiful rights and lefts, all with KO power.

But yes, of course a guy 185-190 is going to have problems with the Klitschkos and Lewis's. It's just a matter of size.

Dempsey would have been a LHW in today's game, and I don't think there's a LHW in the modern era who could have stood up to him, or been able to stay away for 12-15 rounds. He brutally KO's Moorer, Jones, Tarver, Dariusz, etc.
